The Waiuku District.—The Southern Cross gives the following singular consequence of the rejoicings at Auckland in honor of the Royal Nuptials :—" We are informed th«t a number of women and children from this district have been removed to Auckland or its neighborhood, in consequence of the alarm experienced from the peculiar attitude of the Maories there. This appears to have arisen from the following circumstauce :—On the occasion of the marriage celebration some of the settlers lighted large bonfires on the top of the Bald Hills and elsewhere, and the Maories could not be persuaded that it was not a signal for a general rising of the pakehas to kill them. One gentleman met a party of natives who had been sawing timber, leaving their work. They accounted for their sudden departure by disclosing their fears, at the same time shaking with terror in apprehension of what they supposed to be their impending fate. Their pakeha interrogator laughed at them, to try and remove their apprehension, but they were not to be comforted, and went away, leaving their work undone. Owing to this the village of Patumahoe had been completely deserted, and the former residents of it were supposed to be hiding in the bush, or skulking about with firearms. This, it appears, was the origin of the fears which caused the removal of the women and children from Waiuku. The pakehas are afraid of the Maories; but the Maories are ten times more afraid of the pakehas—a grand exemplification of "Maori courage."
