A strong gale prevailed on the Bth instant, in Dunedin, which increased in violence as the night approached. In several instances damage was done to frail structures and outbuildings, In one case, however, the destructive power of the wind was attended with more serious consequences. The handsome new bar of the Provincial Hotel, situated at one of the most exposed .angles of the city, seemed to be especially selected by the disturbed elements for the display of their wrath. The two magnificent sheets of plate glass, measuring 17 by 12J feet, which constituted the great feature of the fronts of the building on Manse and Stafford streets, were completely destroyed, the wind dashing them to pieces as if they had been frail sheets of paper. The loss occasioned to Mr. Jones, the proprietor of the Provincial, must be very considerable. We fear we shall have to report other instances of accident and destruction of a similar character. It will be seen that the prevalence of the gale greatly interrupted the search for further evidence of the recent calamity in the harbor.— Daily Times.
