SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES. Sportsmen all over tlio Dominion were looking forward with great interest to the meeting between Gloaming and Arrowsmitth in tlio Islington Plate. Unfortunately there .was a disappointment, .as Arrowsmith is amiss. It is to be hoped that the trouble will not prove serious, as there are few enough high class horses in commission at present.

Bengeroop and Almoner, both owned by Mr J. P. Murphy, of Timaru, and trained by P. T. Hogan, have been showing signs of lamenesß lately and they may not be at their best-till the sting is out of the ground.

Gloaming has won the Islington Plate three years in succession. , His time yesterday, 1.39. was the slowest. Tho fastest was 1.37 l-o, two years ago, when Sasnnof chased him home.

Tressor, who won the Bowen Handicap at the Auckland meeting on Wednesday. is an Australian_bred three year-old colt by Flippant from Linere, by Pistol from Lamb, a sister to the successful sire Linacro . Flippant is an imported horse by Marcovil {son ot Marco) from Flitters, dam of Bronzino, the highest priced horse who ever came to Australia.

Mr. G. L. Stead is having a great time .with his small team at the Auckland Pacing Club’s meeting. In addition to winning the Auckland Cup on Monday with Starland, he won a two-year-old handicap with Leithfield, while on Wednesday he captured a stake with Koyal Box, another" of ' his two-year-olds. All three horses are by Mr Stead’s imported stallion, Nassau, by William the Third. Starland’s dam, Stardancer, is a sister to Warstep, Wardancer and Warlove. by Martin nStepdancer, by Stepm ah-Pibroch, by Lochiel-Fallacy. Gnrston, the dam of Leithfield, is by Birkenhead-Lullabv, by Apremont from imported Hammock. Koyal Box is a half-brother to Bonnetter, their dam being the Australianbred mare Brayton, by Bardolnh. This was the first time Royal Box had started, but. he has the reputation of being a good colt, who may be equal to holding his own in the best company AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB. ANOTHER POSTPONEMENT.
