AUCKLAND MARKETS.
GENERAL MERCHANDISE. [From Our Corhespondent.] AUCKLAND, December 39. _ As the wholesale houses are closed until next week, the Teta.il trade is of principal interest’at the moment. A , survey of tho Christmas period has confirmed the previous estimates of the large volume of business, and this week has been marked by. continuance of activity in most distributing businesses. The presence of a very largo number of visitors’ and their concentration in tho city by'.wet woather'have, helped to swellthe shopkeepers’ returns. So great Ims been tho reduction of stocks that a brisk demand will probably await the wholesalers when they resume. GRAIN AND PRODUCE, With ample supplies and quiet demand, the potato market is weak at 6s to 7s per pwt es store. The supply of onions from Australia, has been stopped by the strike, and existing stocks are held for 25s p«r cwt, but tho local crop is coming into the market, and good samples have sold at l“2s to 14s per cwt. Oats are still weak at 5s Id to 5s 2d per bushel. ' v Chaff is worth 13s per cwt for southern. The local crop has Been good, and tho market will not need to draw so heavily this year on tho South Island.
