Lietenyl is said to have massacred , fifteen hundred persons, half of whom were women and children, during the past three months: After ho was ex- > pellet! from Tsaritsyn he, with a hand of Kalmucks (Mongolians}, seized a river steamer and proclaimed himself ruler of Astrakhan (a Russian province on the north of the Caspian Sea). He ■' ravaged villages and slaughtered the inhabitants. For. example, in October . he killed all the men in a village and carried off the women, who were kept on a steamer for three days. He then cut their throats and the bodies were thrown into the river. Lietenyl and his fellow ruffians, late in November, burned the steamer and started for the Caucasus with huge booty.
