SOUTHBRIDGE. Great praise is due to the promoters and tho Busy Bees,' who gave a most enjoyable Christmas entertainment in the Presbyterian Church Hall last, week, tho seating accommodation' being fully occupied. A piano solo was given .by Edith Money, which was much appreciated. A Christmas hymn was well rendered by the full hive ot “ Bees.” Recitations were given by Victoria Battler, Rita Gianville and Ena Chapman, and a song by Gillies Campbell. “ The J,and of Nod"” was sung bv the senior girls. The story of the. runaway princess was well rendered by Miss Ruby Adams. Great enthusiasm attended the; stripping of the Christinas tree, which was very full of Christmas toys. After supper the chairman thanked all who had helped to make the evening a success.
IR WELL. The annual picnic and prize-giving of the irwell Sunday School was hold at the residence of Mr T. A. Stephens, Waipuna, and was much enjoyed by a large gathering of friends and relations of the children. The prizes were contributed by the Rev William Laycock. The following is the prize list: —Class 1—Boys: Norman Ileslop 1, Arthur Rowley 2, Selwyn Skinner 3. Girls: Ella Winchester 1, Marjorie Greaves 2, Maud Winchester 3. Class 2—Ama Millar and Joyce Greaves equal l, Irene Winchester 2, Winnie Heslop 3. Class 3—Jack Rowley 1, Edgar Skinner 2, George • Williams 3. Infants—Gwen Rowley 1, ltoma Winchester 2, Joan Greaves 3. Sunday School Union examination—Alma Miller (prize by union), Joyce Greaves (prize by Sunday school and certificate), Selwyn Skinner (prize by Sunday school and certificate). Every child present received a small hook.
ASH BURTON. At the Caledonian sports at Temuka the following were the successes of Ashburton County athletes in the final events: —Quarter-mile bicycle dash—H. W. Cant 3. 220yds—W. Merrill 3. 120yds—W. Merrill 1, E. O’Malley 2, W. S. M’Clymont 3. 120yds (hoys, under sixteen)—R. Bnsbyl] 1. Long jump—W, Merrill (Min), 20ft 2in. High jump—M. Farrell (lin), oft Gin.
MAYFIELD. A meeting of the Mayfield Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held last Monday, Mr J. A. Fleming presiding over a good attendance. Mr Marlin. of the Canterbury Philosophical Institute, wrote stating that he would he pleased to arrange a lecture for the second week in January. A deputation from the Methven Agricultural and Pastoral Association, consisting of Messrs Green, T. Harrison, J. Carr, It. Low and J. F. Stone, waited on the committee to discuss the situation arising out of the clashing of next year’s show- dates. The Methven deputation admitted that the decision to hold the show on March 31 had been due to a mistake on their part, and the Mayfield committee resolved to hold to their first arrangement and sottle tho date of the. show for March 31. A motioji that a licensed booth should he placed on the grounds was carried after the defeat of two amendments, one that liquor should not he sold on the grounds, and another that judges onlv should he supplied. 'Hie offer of Mr R. Oakley to allow the association the free use of his paddock was accepted with thanks.
