CADET TOURNAMENT.
MTILLTNGTON r. CHRISTCHURCH. A tournament resulting from a challenge by the Wellington Cadets and aocepted by the Christchurch Cadets is being held here. The visiting team, under Lieutenant Milos, comprising fourteen N.C.O.’s and Cadets drawp from a Wellington company, arrived In Christchurch on Sunday, and are billeted in the Artillery quarters, King Edward Barracks, Cashel Street. A comprehensive programme of events has been arranged, and the competitions so far have been carried out according to •plans.
The competition was opened in the Barracks on Monday by a physical training _ contest, which was won by the Christchurch team with 78 points as against 75 scored by Wellington. The judge was Lieutenant Pleasants, N.Z.S.C. This was followed by a rifle exercises competition, which was won by the Wellington Cadets with 85 points as against Christchurch's (id. Next followed a squad drill competition, which was won by 'Wellington with 75 points as against Christchurch's 55. Tho judge for these two events was Lieutenant Hoar, of tho Christchurch Boys' High School Cadets. A shooting competition was also carried out in tho miniature range, King Edward Barracks. Three practices were fired—group practice 5 rounds, application 5 rounds and rapid 10 rounds in 90 seconds, and resulted in a handsome win for the Christchurch team, whose shooting in the rapid practice was exceptionally creditable, the total scores being: Christchurch 440 and Wellington 317 out of a possible of 510. The points awarded for competition purposes were:—Christchurch 88 and Wellington 63. On Tuesday at ten o’clock a route march competition was carried out, the route being through the Barracks via Park Terrace to Feudal ton. through Clyde Road to Riccarton, and back via the .Hospital to Christchurch, a distance of slightly under five miles. Points were awarded for “ march discipline.” This was won by the Christchurch team with 80 marks as against 70. Tho time was approximately two hours? This was judged by Major Morton, late of the Canterbury Regiment, N.Z.E.F. On Tuesday afternoon swimming competitions were held in Christ’s College baths, kindly lent for the occasion, and resulted in a win for tho Christchurch team, who hnd the advantage of having a greater number to pick from and only two of their team having competed in the route march in the morning, whereas the whole of the Wellington team hnd been in the route march. The neat divo was won by Christchurch. In the high dive the teams drew, the best dive being made by Cadet Robbie, of Wellington. In the breast-stroke, 25yds, fit st and second went to Christchurch by Sergeant Campbell and Cadet Ward, and Wellington gained third and fourth with Cadet Staples and Cadet Brown. The 30yds dash first and second was won by Christchurch bv Cadet Ward and Cadet Cbivers, and Wellington third and fourth by Cadet Davies and Cadet Robbie. The relay race was won by Christchurch, the points awarded being: Christchurch 59] and Wellington. 40]. \ On Wednesday morning tennis was played on a- court kindly lent by the Canterbury College Club, and resulted in a win for Wellington after n wellcontested game of one set of doubles which was exceptionally close and two sets of singles, one of which was a. love set to Wellington. Points were awarded :. Wellington 66 and Christchurch 43.
The tournament will finish with a two-innings cricket match at Christ's College grounds to-day, commencing at eleven o’clock.
So far the position of the competing teams is as under:—
Ohristohurcli, 4 wins . 469} points Wellington, 3 wins . 404} points Tho visitors, who are paying their first visit to Christchurch, will devote to-morrow and Saturday to sight, seeing, returning to their homos on Saturday night. The tournament has created a lot of enthusiasm, and already revenges are planned to he taken out at Wellington, it is hoped, during blaster time.
Tiie Wellington team is composed of boys of very fine physique and of good sporting qualities, who it is estimated would give the Christchurch team a stone all round in weight. Tho Christchurch team for the military events was drawn from the Model Platoon, and for the sporting events chiefly from, the Model Platoon, but strengthened by members of the l9t Canterbury Cadet Battalion.
