SHIPPING NOTES. The Woottbn has finished discharging her timber from Greymouth, and yesterday was transferred from No. 3 -wharf to No. 8 breastwork, -where she will lay up to undergo overhaul and survey prior to being placed on the Blip about the middle of January. The Waikawa finished discharging yesterday afternoon and sailed for Dunedin. On completing tho discharging of San Francisoo cargo at Dunedin, the vessel will proceed to Melbourne and Sydney. At the last-named port she will undergo overhaul and then proceed to San Francisco. / The Calm arrived from Wellington yesterday afternoon, and will 3ail for Dunedin today.

Tho Kokiri was engaged in discharging coal into a hulk yesterday for bunker coal for the Wahine,

The Poherua, Kahika and Kakapo were not worked yesterday, owing to labour shortage.

The Ngatoro left last night for Timam, where she will complete discharging her cement cargo from Whahgarei. The Ngakuta, at present discharging timber from Kaipara, is not expected to leave for Grej-mouth until next week. . The Woodarra has boon further delayed at : Wellington, but is expected to leave for London to-day. The Wakatu arrived from Wellington, via Kaikoura, last evening. She is expected to leave on the return trip to-morrow. The Tarawera is due at Wellington on Saturday, from Sydney, via southern porta. The Orepuki is due at the end of the weeK from Greymouth with a load of timber. The Arawa, which -arrived at Auckland on Saturday, brought 478 passengers for tho Dominion, 64 travelling in the first saloon, 75 iu the seoond-class, and 358 in the steerage. Her cargo for Auckland is on© of 8500 tons, and on completion of discharge she will sail for Wellington, where she is duo on January 5. Captain H. S. Lewis is in oommand.

Advices received in Sydney on December 21 state that the new steamers now being built for the Aberdeen Line will be named Diogenes and Sophocles respectively. The Diogenes and Sophocles will both be larger than the Euripides, and are an improvement on that vessel. Although tlio Diogenes will be the first vessel of the line to bear this name, the Sophocles will bo tho third vessel so designated. The other two were the old barque, which is still afloat and bears her original name, but for years past has sailed under tho Italian flag, and the old Shaw, Savill and Albion liner lonic, a vessel of 5000 tons gr.oss, which was called Sophocles on being acquired by the line, but which was sold out of the service some time ago. It is announced that the United States foreign trade for the year ended June 30, 1920, totalled 13,549,000,0Q0 dollars,' of which the exports totalled 7,950,000.000 dollars. Vessels • under the American flag numbered 38,183, with a gross tonnage of 16,234,00. -

The breakwater at Alexandria harbour has been completed. The north-eastern arm is 330 yards long, and tho south-eastern arm 475 yards long. A fixed green light has been placed on the nqi£h-eastern extremity of the breakwater and a. red conical buoy has been established in the place of‘the light buoy at * distance of about 90 yards north-east of tho new light mentioned above.
