SHIPPING NOTES. Advice has" been received by the Marine Superintendent at Lyttelton to the effect that the fog signal at Cuvier Island is out of order. The Breeze, from Dunedin -via Timaru, is duo to-day. She will leave for Picton and Wanganui this evening. The Virgilia, from New York vi» New Zealand ports, is duo this morning. The City of Brißtol, from New York direct, , should arrive in the stream at 1 p.m._ to-day. The Kittiwa is due on Sunday with 800 tons of coal and the remainder of her caigo of timber. The Cosmo will leave Sydney this week-end for Bluff and Dunedin. On discharging she will proceed to Port Chalmers i to undergo alterations and overhauling. The Kamona is to load timber t\ Greymouth next week for Lyttelton. Mr W. Hv Gower left Lyttelton last evening for Wellington, where he will join the John.as second mate. The Moeraki was to leave Sydney last evening for Wellington, where she should arrive on Monday morning. The Westralia is due this morning from Melbourne, via Wellington. She should lea-re for Dunedin this evening. The Tarawera is timed to leave Sydney this week-end. The barque Rona (Scales and Co.), winch arrived at Newcastle recently after a fourteen davs' trip from Wellinsrton, experienced bad weather, and was considerably knocked about. Towards the end' of the voyage in a stiff gale she lost a main topsail, upper topsail and outer jib. The Woihora ie due at Wellington from 'Union Brv, Vancouver, on December 15. The Mokoia is expected to arrive at Wellington to-day from Auokland, and should arrive in Lyttelton on Sunday. The vessel has a consignment of sugar on board to land here. The Baden Powell was timed to leave Wel- \ lington laßt evening for Lyttelton. ' The Wakatu is due back to-day, via Kaikotira. The Kahika is eocpeoted to load coal at Westport this week for Lyttelton. ; The four-masted American schooner Commerce, which left San Francisco on September •19, under the command of Captain C. Anderson, arrived at Lyttelton yesterday with t load of lumber and esse oil. During the trip a seaman died,- and was buried at sea. ,Tho voyage was otherwise uneventful, good weather being experienced until the New Zeeland coast was reached. The vessel was sighted off Godley Heads on Tuesday morning, but ttfe wind not being favourable, she did not mako port until yesterday afternoon.

THE SCHOONER ABEMANA. The three-masted schooner Abemaua arrived in Lyttelton yesterday morning from Hobart with 200,000 ft of hard wood for discharge at Port. The vessel left Hobart on the morning of November 28, and experienced strong sou'-west winds until she arrived off the Bluffy five days later. The voyage is considered to 'be a record. About 200 miles per day was the average speed, which works out at 9} knots an hour. On two days the speed averaged 10* knots. On Friday last, during a gale, the foresail was carried away, and the vessel had to hove to for bis hours while repairs were being' carried out. After the vessel passed' the Blaff light variable winds and a strong northely current were encountered. On Monday and Tuesday thick fogs were experienced. At about 7 p.m. on Tuesday a northerly *ind sprang up which assisted the vessel to make Lyttelton, and she arrived at about 7 am. next day. Captain J. Polgalqe is in command, and has with him as mates Messrs L. Wark and J. Olson. The vessel was built two years ago at Nova Scotia for a Chinese firm in Sydney. She is now owned by the Patrick Steamship Company. On discharging she will go to Greymouth to load timber for Sydney.

The Waikouaiti, ex Ermgard, arrived at Newport Newß on December 6 from Liverpool, en route for New Zealand. The Waikawa, from Vancouver and San Francisco to Lyttelton. Dunedin and Australia, oalled at Papeete on Sunday morning, and sailed again at 10 a.m., and is due at Lyttelton on. December 15.
