ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

OLD MAN'S DEATH. An inquest was opened at the Paparua prison yesterday by Mr S. *E. M'Car.thy, S.M., and a jury of four into the circumstances surrounding the death of Alexander Tough, -sixty-eight years of age, who had been arrested on a charge of helpless drunkenness, and was undergoing a week's medical treatment. Tho deceased had no relatives in the Dominion. Evidence was given by Constable J. Copelaud and Senior-Sergeant Kelly as to tho deceased's condition at tho time of his arrest.

Evidence was given by prison officials as to tho treatment of the deceased after his admission. On tho day following his admission he was found in a stato of collapse and expired before tho gaol surgeon, Dr Ncdwill, reached the prison. At this stage the inquest was adjourned till 2.15 p.m. to-day at the Courthouse to enable medical evidence to be called.

CHILD RUN OVER BY TAXI-CAB. [Per Press Association.] . DDNEDIN, December 9. Arthur Gilderoz Barnes, aged eight years, was knocked down by a taxicab at Green Island yesterday, and died in the hospital. An inquest was held. A Christchurch visitor, Charles Victor Mario Legall, who was a passenger in the taxi, stated that the car was travelling at not more than fifteen miles an hour. The child seemed to run out in front and the driver swerved and stopped in a couple of lengthsThe inquest was adjourned. FOUND DEAD. WESTPORT, December 9. Keblo Leslie Freeman, wireless operator, on the s.s. Katoa, single, four vears of age and a. native of Cabramatta, New South Wales, was found dead in his cabin this afternoon. He complained of ill-health on the previous evening, but stated that he was much better when the steward saw him at lunch time Three hours later he was found dead on the floor of the cabin. '
