A committee of former pupils of the Elmwood School has been set up to arrange a Buitable presentation to Miss S. lately headmistress of the school, who has retired after thirty years of service in the district. The committee is inviting the co-operation of all ex-pupils of the school. Communications should ha addressed to the Secretary, care of the Elmwood School. The Minister of Justice announces changes and promotions in the polico force. The four superintendents will have their jurisdiction extended. The superintendent at Christchttrch will have his jurisdiction extended to include also Timal'u and Greymouth districts. These arrangements will not in anv way limit the duties _ and resjronsibilities of the officers in charge of these districts but will rather extend the supervision and duties of the,four superintendents, who up to this time have acted only as officers in charge of their own areas. Sub-inspector Dew, Christchtirch, will bo promoted to the rank of inspector in charge of Chrietchurch district under the immediate eop&rvision of the nuperinteadent,
