ASHBURTON. Tho temperature in tho shade at Ashburton yesterday was 83 degrees, tho highest register so far this season. Violont nor’-west winds blew with unabated fury on Wednesday night and continued yesterday. Tho countryside badly needs rain to freshen pastures ail'd facilitate cultural operations. The war memorial at St Stophon’B Anglican Church, Ashburton, will take tho form of a. stained glasa window, the subject of which is tho Ascension. Funds raised for this purpose total £500; and it was decided this week to order tho window in England. Two other memorial windows are on ordor for the church, in memory of the late Mr David Thomas and the late Mr C. W. Nicoll. To promote closer correlation of the scientific and practical sides of the study of agriculture has been the aim of the Ashburton High School Board of Governors, and a step in. this direction was taken at a special meeting yesterday morning, when the board met Mr A. H. Cockayne, representing the Department of Agriculture. He consented to the appointment of on Advisor/ Board by the school governors to .act in conjunction with the Department’s officer in controlling tho Government experimental area at Ashburton. The idea is to work tho progranyme at the experimental area, so as to fit in with tho practical instruction of boys at the school. _ Commandant Wyatt, who has been appointed to tho chaTge of the Ashburton corps of the Salvation Army, arrived in Ashburton yesterday. The new officer has been stationed in Wainnate for somo years. He was welcomed last evening at the Salvation Army bathers. , , . , ~ Mr A. Drummond, ox-chairman of the Ashbutton County Council, left Ashburton yesterday to take up residence at his new property, Five Rivers, Southland. The annual excursion of the Hampstead School was held at Tirnaru yesterday, when it was estimated that 1100 people took advantage of tho day’s outing. The strong nor’-wester at Tirnaru made conditions unpleasant on Carolino Bay except for the batehrs.
AMBERLEY, On Monday thoro was a largo gathering in tho Amberley Town Hull to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Scott and family. Mr Scott, who lias been postmaster at Amberley for several years, is transferring to iGopo. Mr Holton (chairman'of the Amberley Town Board), in presenting Mr and Mrs S'oott with a purse of bank notoß, spoko of tho oordial relations which had existed between Mr and Mrs Scott and the public. The Rev MDonakl also took the opportunity of presenting Miss Scott with a handsome bag in recognition of her services aa assistant organist and Sunday' school teacher. Mr Scott, in replying, said he was deeply moved by tho many kind things which had been spoken. Ho admitted it wns a difficult task for a publio official to please everyone, but ho was indeed thankful that the public of Amberley had appreciated his efforts in that direction. During the evening a most enjoyable programme of musical items was given, after which supper was handed Tound, and a _fthort„(la,nco concluded a most enjoyable evening. RANGIORA. Under the auspices of the Publio Health Department, Miss Adelaide Bnllantine gave an addreen to women at the Bangiora Borough Council Chambers yesterday afternoon on the social hygieno legislation proposed by the Government. Owing to various causes, there was a very small attendance.
