RHODES SCHOLARS.

TWO RETURNED SOLDIERB APPOINTED. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, November 23. The Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee mot to-day, the GovernorGeneral presiding. Two scholarships were awarded as followsl or AV. T. J. Aires (Auckland) : for L-l, H. J. Ryburn (Otago). Both the successful candidates are returned soldiers.

1 Mr Hubert James Ryburn, who is studying for the ministry at Otago l university, is the second 9011 of the Rev R. M. Ryburn. minister of St Andrew s Presbyterian Chmoh, Christchurch. He was born twei ty-three yeare ago at Gisborne, during his father’s first charge in the mmisUy. He attended the Ai anganui District School and the Southland Bovs’ High School, where he was dux , n 1915 He won a Junior University Scholarship in the same year. He uistinguielied himself in mathematics at . Otago University', and in 1919 won a f \ e w Zealand University bemor Scholar--1 ship in mathematics, and was awarded the Beverley Scholarship m advanced mathematics.. He gained his B.A. degree last year, and has just sat for the M.A. degree. During the past year Mr Rvburn has been vice-president of the Students’ Association at Otago University and president of the Arts Faculty. 'He is also president of the Knox Colj 0 ze Students' Club and treasurer of the Christian Union. In 1919 lie won the •niifce for the best first-year debater, and he represented the Arts Faculty in the inter-university debate. He has figured prominently in athletics, and n. captain of the University Hockey ‘'tub. He renresonted the province in hookey in 1919, and also last season, when he enptnined the Otago representatives. He was a member of the first Rugby fifteen at Southland High School, and he is also a lawn tennis player. Mr 1 Rvburn went to the war in 1617, and ■was in Germany with the New Zealand Division. Ho was th© Otapo nomin©6 for the Special War Rhodes Scholarship awarded in August last to Mr S. P. M’f’allum, of Canterbury College. Mr Jftvburn’s ©lcter broth©!*, Brio, was klllod at Passchendnele.
