ENGLAND v. NEW SOUTH WALE'S

The takings for the three days amounted to £5055, which is a record, the previous beet being £4500, at Melbourne, several years ago. The aggregate attendance was 63,000. The critics, who up to yesterday wore doleful, stg now overflowing with jubilation at the result of the match. Praiee of the splendid partnership of Collins and Macartney is mingled with surprise at' the failure of the English bowling, nil the possibles being tried out and proving equally ineffective One conclusion reached is that the test team must comprise a goodly sprinkling of New South Wales men. The '‘Telegraph" says:—"The match was largely Gregory’s. He did all the big things except score a century. He (howled the first ball, and mado the top score in the first innings. In each inninvs ho captured the howling average, and made the winning hit." The scene on tho ground was remarkable. The attendance at the start was email, hut as it became known that the local men were establishing a winning position tho crowd ritpid'y swelled. The excitement throughout was keen, and towards tho closo became tremendous.

Most critios believed that the Englishmen had the game safely iu hand at tho end of Saturday's play. It generally is admitted that the Australian strength for tho tests has boon underrated, especially tho bowling, but it is pointed out that England’s bowling strength was not fully availablo for this match. The result has given increased interest to tho first tost match.
BARFIELD v. SHEFFIELD. The Darflo’d team journeyed to Sheffield on Saturday, and wore defeated by the home team. Darfield. batting first, made 150 (W. Summervillo 32, L. Westwood 29, J. Roacho 23. C. Dunnet 13 and S. Taylor IS not out). Sheffield replied with 171 for three wickets to- Y> 86, O. Wroth 50, J. Fraser 20 noiout G. Wrhht 11 not out). For Darfield L Westwood secured two wickets for Rfl D o Uon one for 28 ; wHle for Sheffield R Gunn took five for 31 and J. Gunn two for 32.
NORTH CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the committee of the North Canterbury Cricket Association was held at Panel ora yesterday afternoon. Mr T. Hanna presiding. A letter was road from the secretary of tho North Island Nomad team in regard to playing North Canterbury in Christchurch on January ( and B The matter was left in the hanSs of the secretary to make arrangements. A letter wim received from the Arnoerley club protesting ’against tile match arranged for November 20 being awarded to Oust. After a lons discussion, during which the chairman ruled that Rule 20 had not been broken, a resolution was unanimously earned Jhat the match should be played on a date to be arranged by the captains of the two clubs,
