NEWS AND NOTES. The North Canterbury and Oxford Jockey Club will distribute £IOSO : n stakeß at its meeting on Labour Day. Tho programme caters for horses of all classes, and as the (meeting does not entail a long journey, it should attract strong support from the Riccarton stables, as a preliminary to the Canterbury Jockey Club’s November fixture. The Australian Jockey Club’s spring meeting will bo concluded to-day. Chief interest will attach to the Kandwick Plate, in which Poitrel and Kennaquhair, who ran a dead beat over a mile and a half last Saturday, will resume hostilities at two miles. A start will be made to-day with the Victoria Amateur Turf Club’s spring meeting. With so many of the best Australian horses in Sydney, Eurythrnio will encounter only moderate opposition in the Caulfield Stakes, while for a similar reason the field for the Caulfield Guineas will bo more remarkable for numbers than quality. Tho Dobwtnnt Stakes, tor two-year-olds, and the Toorak Handicap, one mile, are other important events on tho programme. Nominations for all events for the North Canterbury and Oxford Jockey Club’s spring meeting will close on Monday at 8 p.m. For the Dunedin races excursion tickets will be issued from Lyttelton, Kingston, Waimato and intermediate stations, on October 13 and 14, available for return till October 23The nominations received last night for seven events at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting next month totalled 316, an increase of seven on last year's.
