SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES. Tho work on tho Ricearton tracks just noiv is of no special interest. There is a big crowd of horses of all ages out each morning, but their tasks are of an easy character at present. Under normal conditions there would bo a strong contingent in preparation for the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting, hut as there does not appear to be much prospect of South Island horses getting to Trcntham next month, tho local trainers are going on quietly with their charges. The hunt club fixtures at Timaru and Amborley will engage the attention of a few Riccarton horses next month, hut the majority of them will not be required to race until the Grand National meeting. T. Lloyd is keeping Sunart in steady exercise, but that is all, as the Sunny Lake gelding is not likely to bo required till the spring. The North island steeplechasers, Master Strowan, Waimai and Coalition, are regular attendants at tho Riccarton tracks. They are all well forward in condition, and they arc going along steadily in view of tho Grand Natiouall meeting. I

While lie expected to get away to Sydney, R. J. Mason kept lu3 team moving along with plenty of strong work, but as tho Australian trip is off, for tho present, lus charges are noiv being restricted to slightly easier tasks. They shoufd bo in good order lot spring engagements.

A mistake in tile physic administered to three pacing horses in J. D. Smith’s stable at Heathcote has had serious effects. The trainer, having decided to give the horses a drench, gave an order for linseed oil, which ho intended to mix with turpentine. Some time after the physic had been administered tho horses were found to bo in a bad way and veterinary aid was called in. Examination of the tonic, which was believed to contain linseed oil, showed that it contained a mixture,’ in which carbolic acid was present in a large proportion. . 10 three horses received every attentmn, hufc Silver Heir and Kaweah died <>n ff it day, while Albert Wallace is still a bad way. Silver Heir was a four-Jear-old and Kaweah a three-year-old, and both of them showed promise of developing into high-class performers, b! ver Heir was purchased recently for b - v Messrs Fairbairn and Maco tgor, while Kaweah was owned by his brooder, Mr J. W. Webb.
