MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. The conversion of tho Cunard liner Aquitania to an oil burner marks an epoch in tho history of mercantile tnarino engineering. It is expected that the ship will be ready in July to attempt to establish a new transAtlantic record. The cost of the alterations is £500,000. Tho Aquitania will carry sufficient fuel for two voyages. Mr Austin Chamberlain, Chancellor of the Exchequer, 'has written to tho heads of Government Departments enjoining the strictest economy. He says that not a penny will be allowed by way of Supplementary Estimates. The" American Federation of Labour at Montreal passed a resolution demanding Government ownership and democratic operation of tho railways in tlio United States, completely defeating Mr Compere. Tho Portsmouth Corporation is promoting a scheme to develop Langston Harbour into a mercantile port, and hopes to obtain co-operation and financial support by the Australian, New geatesd J3sd Canadian Governments^
