At a meeting last night, the local Labour Representation Committee decided in favour of Mr C. Renn as a Labour candidate for the seat on the City Council, which became vacant bv the death of Mr W. Nicholls

As Captain Dickson’s aeroplane passod over Ashburton shortly after twelve o’clock yesterday several copies of the “Lyttelton Times” were dropped Ono fell in Air Aspinnll’s garden in Havelock Street West, and one was picked up by Alaster Les Cooper, oon of Air F. K. Cooper.

The Board of Governors of the M’Lean Institute met yesterday; prosent—Air G. Harper (in the chair), Mrs Sandston, Revs IV. Ready and It. Ai. Ityburn, and Messrs S. 13. M’Carthv, S.AL, and H. D. Acland. Apologies were received for the absence of Airs Wilson and Air B. AI. Alolyneaux. A letter was received from tho secretary of tho Hospital and Charitable Aid Board stating that Air H. J. Dr F. IV. Hilgendorf, of the Agricultural College at Lincoln, gave the first of a series of lectures on grasses in the Biological Laboratory of Canterbury College last’ night. The lecture dealt first with the structure of grasses. He described the parts of an ordinary flower, and said that non-essential parts always were suppressed in grasses, whose whole classification depended on the character of the spikelets. Tho seeds of grasses might bo distributed by wind, by adhering to animals, or by changes in tho moistness of tho atmosphere. With an artificial key supplied by botanists, any specimen of a grass could be assigned ’to the tribe to which it belonged, and tho species could be determined by consulting a botanical work.

The Arbitration Court has forwarded to Auckland its judgment in the compensation case Remnant v Dempsey, coal merchant. Plaintiff was incapacitated from work following an accident which happened to him in May, 1919, while ho was in defendant’s employ, but the matter was complicated because lie was suffering at the time from arteriosclerosis (progressive hardening of tho arteries), which was bound to incapacitate him sooner or later. The question for tho Couid was whether he should be awvrded a lump sum in respect of-fu-ture incapacity in place of a weekly allowance such as lie had received since his accident. Tho Court decided that the probable period of incapacity from tbo accident was two years, and awarded a, lump sum of £2OO to cover thait period, reserving the right to plaintiff’s dependents to claim compensation should he die within that.period, on the ground that his death was due to tho effects of the accident. In the Divorco Court at Wellington yesterday H. J. Challorau, farmer and land agent, Woodville, was granted a decree nisi on account of his wife’s misconduct with Frank Albert Loft. He claimed £2OOO damages. The jury awarded £SOO. At tho Magistrate’s Court, Dannevirko, yesterday (states a Press Association message), Mr ,S. L. Free, S.M., delivered his reserved judgment in tho caso in which William Lindergreeii, hairdresser, Dmmevirke, was charged with bookmaking at tho last Thinnevirko races, also with unlawfully trespassing on the Racing Club’s course on tho same occasion. Defendant was convicted on both charges and fined £IOO on the first and £2O on the second, with costs in each instance.

A deputation from the South Island Potato Growers’ Association, beaded by Mr IV. J. Walter, called on the Mayor yesterday and asked him to telegraph to tho Prime Minister to learn if it were possible for the growers’ representatives to interview Air Massey to-day, during his visit to Christchurch. Dr Thacker consented, and promised to introduce the deputation if tho meeting were arranged. Last night the Mayor stated that tho Prime Minister had wired that.he would meet tho deputation at Warner’s Hotel at 10 o’clock this morning.

Tho Christchurch branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association is at present collecting evidence from ex-soldiers who entered into contracts for tho purchase of properties, either town or rural, at any time prior to the sudden notification of tho suspension of advances. When this list has boon compiled a copy will be forwarded to the Minister of Lands and a deputation will strongly urge that instructions should bo given to Commissioners of Crown Lands to receive the applications of tho men mentioned and to deal with them on their merits. As this deputation will wait upon the Minister in ten days’ time, it is hoped that all men who wish their cases to be specially dealt with should communicate with tho secretary at onco.

A meeting of the Chrisfrkiurch Accountant Students’ Soeietv was held in tho rooms of tho Employers’ Association on Monday night. The meeting took the form of a mock meeting of shareholders of tho “ Antarctica Gas, Goal and Coke Company, Ltd.,”. tho report and balance-sheet of which company had been distributed among members prior t-o the meeting. The position of directors of the said company was filled by Mr J. S. Day (chairman) and Messrs H. M’llra.ith and E. G. Thomas; auditor. Mr R T. Tosswill, and secretary, Air R. L. Hicks, and these gentlemen were kept fully employed by tho shareholders justifying tho various items set out in the final accounts as presented. Students wore in good attendance and - showed keen interest and enthusiasm in their criticism of the balance-sheet. Altogether, tho meeting was a most successful and amusing one, and closed after a hearty vote of thanks had been passed to those gentlemen who had taken such pains in drawing up tho accounts and balance-sheet so as to give so much food for discussion and criticism.
