THE PEAQE TREATY

MESSAGE TO INDIAN MOSLEMS. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. Router's Telegrams. DELHI, May 14. The Viceroy, in a message to Moslem India regarding tbe Turkish Peace, states that the decision of the Supremo Council in respect to the peace with Turkey was reached after careful and anxious consideration of the representations of Moslems of all countries. Tho Government is issuing with a .summary of the terms a statement explaining tho principles of the decision and the reasons for them.

After thanking Moslems for their war service, the Viceroy states that although tho terms are in full accordance with the high principles applied. to Peace settlements with other enemies, they include terms which lie fears must be painful to all Moslems. He concludes with the statement that ho is confident that the new treaty will quickly result in tho renewal of friendship between Turkey and Britain, and that Turkey, regenerated and full of hope and strength, will stand forth as in the past tho pillar of the Islamic faith.

TURKISH INDIGNATION “ Tho Times ” Service.

CONSTANTINOPLE, May 16. Tho details of tho Peace Treaty caused a sensation amongst the Turks, who received them with mingled indignation and depression. Tewfik Pasha, president of the Peace Delegation, wired to tho Grand Vizier to the effect that the Treaty was absolutely incompatible with tho aspirations of tho Government in regard to independence. The Turkish Press comments are in a similar tone.

It is pointed out, inter alia, that the loss of Smyrna will injure Turkey ■without giving any advantage to tho Greeks, while the Chatalja frontier will provoke endless racial hostility.. Tho Government will resign if modifications are not obtained, and whether tho Sultan will find a Ministry is doubtful. Tho Nationalists, jf reinstated, will provo more unvielding rmless they are convinced that the Allies aro ready to uso force freely.
