THE ILLUMINATIONS.
BRILLIANT SCENE IN SQUARE. A foretaste of tho very brilliant illuminations that will mark the Prince a visit was given last night, when a trial hgbting-up of the Post Office and public innldings was efieotod. JHo Post Office, outlined in red. white ana blue lamps, looked remarkably effective, tho clock tower being surmounted with a big white star, while a oiown m white illuminated the royal term* under which the letters " G.R. were emblazoned in white. A ring oi white lamps encircled the eastern clock face very effectively, and along the northern facade a big five-pointed fctar and the letters "Git. vaneo the design. , ~,■ ~ The public buildings were brilliantly lit with a crown in white over the word 'Welcome," while a uttunoiis Now Zealand ensign mechanically onorated, fluttered underneath. The "LVttelton Times" Company's design in Cathedral Square was also St up. It consisted of a blue star and the name "Renown" in white lamps, the whole face of thu building being also outlined electrically. To-night, when tho central arches add their brightness to the genera lighting scheme, the scene in Cathedral Square will far outshine anything previously attempted in the way ox illusion. It is hoped that business places on the Royal route from the station will vie with one another us
brightening the so@ne, and tho Mayor appeals to them to hang out flags and lampß wherever possible-
