SPORTING.

NEWS'AND NOTESThe Araberley Booing, Club's meeting will he held on, Saturday of next weak. Tho stakes total £950, with a silver oup added to one event, and the programme caters for ell classes of horses. Nominations will close tomorrow at 8 p.m., at tho office of tho Canterbury Jockey Olub. Tho Jumpers' Flat Handicap R°t Amberley is restricted to horses who have completed the course in a hurdlcy race or steeplechase, and who are not out of hack class In either jumping department, while they must bo ridden in tho race by hurdle and (steeplechase riders. It is claimed that this is the first race of its kind that has ever been pnt on a race programme," with only hack hurdlers and hack steeplechasers ableIt is understood that R. J- Mason will make his usual trip to Sydney in. the autumn with n. few horses, remaining for the spring meeting of tho Australian Jockey Olub, and so avoiding the New Zealand winter. Tho rumour that Mason contemplates an early retirement is once more revived. Sasanof is nob engaged in tho Canterbury Challenge Stakes, and with Gloaming off tho scene there does not appear to be any high-class old horso to dispute tho position with Ainythas and the two-yoar-olds. It is thought probable that Mr W. G. Stead's two-year-old filly Delight will do her Easter racing at Riccaiton, and hor meeting with Moorfowl and Winter "Wind in tho Champagne Stakes and Challenge Stakes should create a lot of interest. Delight created a big impression when she won the Gimcr&ck Stakes at Randwick in' the soring, and her running at the recent meeting at Napier Park showed that alio was in form.

TROTTING ASSOCIATION. MEETING OF BOARD. The board of tho New Zealand Trotting Association met yesterday afternoon; present—Messrs P. Selig (chairman), H. W. Kitchinijham, W. 11. Dcnton,W. J. M. Hopkins, H. P. Nicoll and B. W. Short. Tho chairman mentioned tho Gleaming case, which was referred to tho board by the Forbury Park Trotting Ciub. At tho summer meeting of the club, Gleaming was scratched two hours before tho raco for which ho was entered on each day. The chairman said that tho owner and trainer ■were In attendance to evidence to the board if necessary. Of course, an owner •was quite within his rights in scratching a horso two hours beforo a, xaeo if ho thought fit. However, as it wag alleged that the horso was hoavily backed in doubles on both days, it was folt that in the interests of clean sport an inquiry should bo made, Mr H'opkin3 thought tho board should have nothing to, do with tho case. Tho Forbury Park Club had fjiwm no evidence in support of its allegations. He thought tho club should deal with the case. Tho chairman said that the board had agreed to hear what the owner and trainer hod to say, because they were residents of Canterbury. Aiter some further discussion it was agreed to hear the owner and trainer.

The ownor, Richard J. Stono, of Christchurch, oaid ho was not present when tho horse was scratched on tho first day. The trainer scratched, horse. He told the trainer before ho left Christohurch that if lie (witness) was unable to attend the meeting on the first day, tho horso was to bo pcratched. As he was unable to attend the first day, the hors» was scratched. When he arrived in Dunedin for the second day, tho trainer told him tho horso was not fit, and ho at onoo gave orders that it should bo scratohed. He did not know when this was done. Ho knew of no transactions with bookmakers, Ho had not spoken to a bookmaker in his life. Ho had heard remarks that ho was mixed up with bookmakers in connection with tho Gleaming case. He had strongly resented such insluations. In reply to questions from members of tho board, ho said ho did not know that Gleaming was heavily backed, although a rider said, he would like to rido Gleaming, «s ho had backed him heavily in a double. This rider spoko to him after the horse ho (tho ridef) had backed had won the big raco on tho second day. He did not know whether tho horso was scratched at that time, as ho h?.d loft tho scratching to the trainer. Ho told the rider in question that the horso was not fit and would not start. He did not remember being offered £2CO or any sum of money to start tho horso. The chairman: If fomo ono offered mo jn.oo or a like sum to start a horso 1 think I should have remombored it. Replying to another question witness said he was not offered any money to scratoh Gloaming. Ho was quite willing to show hin hank flx>ok to the board. He feW <hd ca.se very keenly. * The trainer, Willtom Warren, of Christchurch, eaid he had trained Gleaming for the Forbury Park meeting in question. Ho had scrnteui ih.» hcrso on the first day Decauso SUno was uroaVle to attond the meeting that day. Even if Stono had been present ho did rr.t in'>j>\i Gleaming would have started because he considered the horso wus not fit. He scratched th l * horso on tho first uay about 3 p.m. Ho had _ vue horse at the mooting in case ho received instructions from Stono to start him. Further, although Stone had not arrived by train thtp previous day, there was a clwuico that ho would come through by motor-oar. He lhougut that, tht rulei allowed a Horse to bo BCiatcned half-an-houx beforo & raco. The horse was ectaicliea on tho second day because he was off colour. Gleaming dm not fcroughti to tho course that day. 9*a«. rider referred to by Btono had asked to be allowed •& rw'e tho horse on that day and oiiorcd fliO ii ha won. When h.O was taldi tho h.'ivo v a.< off colour he increased; his offer to iIW cr £250. Witness did not know if Stone was aware of this offer. Ho had given Gleaming some road work' on tho morning of tho second day, but ho Was still off colour. The horse was not feeding well and wa*s not at his best. He did not Tv«r.t t.: start tho horso unless h« was sure of winning the race. Ho had) heard ia.ll sorts of rumours that tho book| makorß wore connected with the 'scratching' of Gloaming. From what he had heard since, the bookma-kora would have lost a considerable cam of money had Gleaming won on the second day. It was decided to accept the explanations given by the owner ivnd trainer 'as satisfactory. E. Tohill wioto protesting against tho disqualification by tho Otago Central Trotting Club of his horoo, Hu:a M l .. after winning a race at the club's mooting. The ground of tho disqualification was that Tohill, who was riding the horse, shook hands with a spectator on pulling up. Tohill stated that, just after • tho raco am intoxicated man had rushed 1 up and grasped him by tho hand. In view of tfc.is circum. u stance he considered that disqualification waa an excossh'o punishment and that a fine would havo met the. ease. • The board took no notion in tho matter. Mr T. Qtvm wrote, asking when tho dis« qualification would bo removed from St Quontin, lately owned by Mr J. J. Cotter, of Winchestet. It was decided to reply that tho disqualification still stood.

Tho programme of tho Forbury Park Trotting Club's winter nieethxg was passed, but it was decided to draw tho attention of tho club, ti> tho fact that its elites clashed with tho Ashburton meeting Tho Taranaki Treating Club wrote, again renewing its application for a two days' totalisator permit. It was decided to inform, tho club that as far as tho board was concerned it was Agreeable to tho olub having a two clays' permit but that tho question was one for conference. Also to j*Vgo tho club tn approach tho member of j-Jrliament for tho district with a view to securing his sup* port in obtaining 1 an, increase in tho number of permits Tho Tiiuaru Trotting 1 Club wrote, stating l that it hod disqualified W. Brown, driver of Thesesis, for cix months for "an obvious pull" in the. Ternuka Handicap ai the club's meeting l on March' 4. Tho chairman, said that if an obvious pull had occurred, • six months' disqualification, was not sufficient. Ho considered the evidence forwarded by the club was totally inadequate. It wj'.s decided to write to the club for fuller information.

It was decided to invest £750 in war bonds. MARLBOROUGH RACING OLUB. ■ [Per Purcsfi Associations] BLENHEIM. March 10.
