SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

PAPANUI. , Tho monthly meeting oi tho Papanui School Committee was held on Monday night; present—Messrs Patrick (chairman), Smith, Barnard, Hadley and Grimwood, and Mesdaines Barnard, Woodham and Taylor. Tho head master reported, regarding the main school, that tho roll number was 318 ami the average attendance 209. At Bligh’s Hoad school tho roll number was 118 and the average attendance Do. The caretaker of tho main school stated that tho boys from St Bede's College were using tho bath. Tho usual charge was, however, considered too much in view of the number of boys who were using the hath. After discussion, Messrs Patrick, Smith and Grimwood wore deputed to wait on the directors of the college in order to cilect a satisfactory chargo. It was decided that the board architect be written to concerning a movable partition in the large room of tho main school. Tho board .wrote stating that Miss Chilling-, orth had boon asked to act as relieving assistant in the main school. The sports fund showed a credit balance of £ls 11s 7d. The Visiting Committeo for the month are Mesdames Barnard, AVoodhnm and Taylor, for Bligh’s Road school; and Messrs Smith, Hadley and Grimwood for the main school. WALTHAM. The monthly meeting of tho Waltham School Committee was held on Monday, there being present—Mr C. V. Harvey (chairman), Mesdnmes Milton, Besley and Wilson, Messrs Mortlock, Wraight, Watkins and Ford. The school reopened on February 19 with a rather poor attendance. From February 19 to February 27 tho average attendances were:—Boys 314, girls 279.5, a total of 593.5; while tho roll was C 95. The attendance in Standard L to Standard VI. was 92.5 per cent of tho roll number for the past Week, and for the period ended February 27 it was only 84.8 per cent. Tho poor attendance was mainly duo to minor cases of sickness. The two probationers appointed in March have both matriculated. Most of last year’s pupil-teachcrs and probationers did well at tho January examination. The secretary was instructed to apply to tho Education Board for repairs as mentioned in the head master’s report. decided to hold a children's swimming carnival on an afternoon towards the end of the month. The head master was thnnked for his donation of £1 towards prizes, and tho committee passed a donation in accordance with the head master’s letter. It was decided to present the dux medals on tho same afternoon. It was agreed tlial thero should be no school excursion this year. ' SYDENHAM. Tho monthly meeting of tho Sydenham School Committeo was held on Wednesday evening, thero being present:—Mr E. L. M’ivoon (chairman), Mrs S. Willoughby, Messrs J. li. Duncan, F. R. Frayle, C. H. B. Poore, A. C. Frickcr and G. P. Taylor. The head master reported that the average attendanco for tho month had been —Boys, 439; girls, 416. Miss Grace M’Arthur forwarded her resignation as assistant-mistress ae from March 3. Tho Education Board wroto statrng that Miss M. Bradbury had been asked" to act ns relieving assistant, and that Misses M. O’Farrell and N. .Hooker’s resignations had been accepted. On tho recommendation of tho committoo, tho board had appointed Misses D. Blyth, D. Irvine and I. Kennedy as assistant mistresses to tho school. Mr W. R. Robinson had been appointed as probationer as from March 1. Tho head master reported that Mr M’Gallnn had boon unable to attend to his duties owing to illness. Tho committeo expressed regret and trusted that Mr M’Gallan would have a speedy recovery. It was decided that the chairmen of committees, head masters, winners of dux medals and scholarships should bo placed on tho new honours board. Accounts amounting to £22 7s Id were passed for payment. Mcsdnmes A. Riseley and S. Willoughby and Mr J. R. Duncan wero appointed a visiting committee for tho ensuing month. It was decided that the next meeting ho hold on March 30, in lieu of the ÜBual meeting, on account of tho Easter holidays. EAST CHRISTCHURCH. At tho monthly meeting of tho East Christchurch School Committeo Mr A. Poverill was in tho chair. Correspondence was read from tho board, stating that half tho quantity of stationery applied for hod been sent to the school; that Miss Wauchop’s resignation had been accepted with regret, and tho board appreciated tho valuable services rendered by her; and that a meeting of delegates from tho committees of Christchurch East, Linjvood and Woolston would bo held in regard to tho boundaries for tho now Phillipstown school district.

Mr R. Dunbicr wroto, stating that his son Richard had attended tho East Christchurch School for nearly eight years without missing ono day. and had sine© been at the Technical College with a similar record. It was agreed to givo tho boy a prize. A vote of sympathy was accorded Mrs Sapsford and family in tho doath of tho late Mr F. Burdctt Sapsford, ho having been a member of tho committee in tho previous year. It was decided to write to tlio board, askj nc. it to form and gravel a footpath from Phillip Street to tho school, also to supply two loads of gravel for tho South Belt School. Tho head master’s reports showed that tho attendanco had been only fair for tho past month. Messrs Fowler and Harvey wero appointed a visiting committeo for tho month of March.
