NEWS AND NOTES. The engagement is announced of Misa Gladys Mary Anderson, only daughter of Mrs E. R. Anderson, Fendalton, to Edward Henry John Hanmer, of Brazil, late R.E., eldest son of Mrs E. W- Hanmer.

Motor-cars, kindly lent by Miss Osborne, Messrs Kibblewhito, Ballantyne, Pattrick, Shaw, Barrett and Brown, and tho Red Cross and soldiers’ car, conveyed over forty soldiers lrom tho Orthopaedic Hospital to New Brighton on Thursday morning. From there they were taken by Messrs H. N. Hawker, and Gerald Hill in motorboats to Pleasant Point, whore tho New Brighton ladies had provided a bountiful luncheon. Tho weather was perfect and tho plantation and waterfront proved a delightful resting place- After afternoon tea and the voicing of a very hearty vote of thanks to the New Brighton friends for the day’s outing, the party left by motor-launch and car for town.

A successful welcome home social was held in the Ridgloy Hall on Thursday evening, the occasion being In honour of Corporal H. Harrell, who has recently returned. Dancing was the main feature of the evening, about ninety couples dancing to the music supplied by Mr R. Woods, the dances being interspersed by vocal and musical items contributed by Misses M. Grammar, P. Hobbs, E- Bennett and Messrs Douglas and L. Cummings. During the evening Mr R. H. Stillwell, organiser of the affair, welcomed Corporal Hurrell on behalf of all present.

A picnic party of members of the Y.W.C.A. and the Y.M.C.A. took place on Saturday afternoon. The party left hv car and spent the afternoon in the vicinity of Victoria Park. The Association staffs were represented by Messrs Clark and Johnstone and Mr A. L. McAldownoy, tho newly appointed Y.M.C.A. social secretary. Forty sat down to an excellent tea at tho Kiosk. During tho meal it was proposed that the combined committees arrange a similar ramblo on Saturday week. CHRISTCHURCH LADIES’ GOLF CLUB.

Perfect weather, though perhaps a bit hot for golfing, prevailed on Friday when the Ladies’ Golf Club opened its 1920 season. Mrs Eric Harper (captain) provided a delectable tea, which was served in tho golf house, the tables being prettily decorated for the occasion. Mrs Boyle, Mrs Wigram, Lady Boys, Mrs Vernon, Mrs .1- H. Hall, Mrs T. Williamson, Mrs J. Williamson, Mrs Strang (Palmerston North), Mrs Simes, Mrs Green, Mrs Denys Hoare, Mrs Acland, Mrs Beals, Mrs Henry Wood, Mrs Andreae, Mrs J. Donald and tho Misses H. Wood, Pratt (2), D. Anderson, P. Boyle, M. M’Dougall and Newton were present amongst others. During the afternoon a well contested flag match was played, resulting in tho prize going to Mfs Bernard Wood.

FAREWELL DANCE. The popularity of Mr and Mrs W r . E. Mills and the esteem in which they are hold by a large circle of friends was made manifest on Friday evening at a farewell dance given them in the Caledonian Hall. The hosts and hostesses were Mr and Mrs A. J. Barrett, Mr and M/a A. Dickson, Mr and Mrs A. S- Duncan, Mr and Mrs J. L. Ower and Mr ana Mrs D. E. Wood, who spared themselves no trouble in ensuring the enjoyment of those present. The hall, artistically decorated with hanging baskets of scarlet flowers and greenery and festoons of pink and white muslin, was just large enough to comfortably hold tho guests, all of whom were personal friends of, Mr and Mrs Mills. While most of those present danced, a number preferred cards, .and an ante-room was arranged accordingly. Supper was set upstairs, at Bmall tables, each prettily set olf by sweet peas in varying shades of pink. After supper Mr Wood voiced the sentiments of those present when ho spoke of the many good qualities of the guests of honour, and the regret felt at their departure from Christchurch, to which Mr Mills suitably responded.
