NEWS AND NOTESTho special feature of the racing at; tho Altaroa County Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday was the form shown by horses trained by J. B. Pearson. He bad tbreo representatives at tho meeting and each of them won a race, Warlike taking the Peninsula Cup ; Henrietto tho Kinlocli Welter Handicap and Clean Sweep the Terawora Hack Handicap. Henrietto is owned by Mr W. B. Clarkson, while the other two aro raced in partnership by Mr Clarkson and his trainer. Pearson has had a very successful time lately with his small team, Warlike’s wins earlier in tho season including the Greymouth Oup and tho Midsummer Handicap.

Good fields were in evidence at the Akaroa Comity Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday. In the six galloping events the competitors ranged from seven to eleven, while the two trotting races drew fifteen and seventeen starters respectivelyTromena was galloping well in the early stages of the Peninsula Cup on Saturday but she suddenly dropped back to last and a little further on her jockey dismounted. Examination showed that she had broken her off hind leg, just above the fetlock, and she was destroyed. Tremena, who was by Count Witt© from the Treadmill mare Advances had some useful performances' to her credit. It was intended to retire her to the stud at the end of this season, and her death was a serious loss to Mr W. A. Nicholls, as she was a fine type of a mare. At the Thames meeting on Saturday, the Goldfields Cup was won by Rockfield, who was successful earlier in the week, in the principal event on each day of the Te Aroha meeting.
