During last, night's meeting of the Council of Churches the secretary, the Eev J. J. North, reported that he had circularised Parliamentary candidates' with relation to legislation for the suppression of bookmakers and the restriction to existing numbers of racing permits. The replies he had received on the bookmaker issue were very favourable to the council's views. Regarding the racing permits, opinion was more divided. Rev J. Paterson moved that the matters raised by the report should be remitted to the council's committee, with the replies received, and that the committee should be advised to represent the council's views to the Government by means of a deputation chosen from delegates to the prohibition conference next month.
