An endeavour will bo made to dispatch her from ' Wellington for Lyttelton this evening, so that sho can be worked hero to-morrow, as on Wednesday there will bo no work on tho waterfront on account of tho wntersidors' anual picnic nt Kaiapoi. Tho John completed her lending of general cargo yesterday and sailed last evening for Wellington. Tho Purau arrived from Gisborne at Auckland yest-erday morning at 7.30. The Kaloapo arrived in the stream from Napier late on Friday night. She berthed on Saturday morning to unload a consignment of sheep. Tho vessel left again on Satufday ovening for Napier for more sheep. The Corinna arrived at Lyttelton on Saturday morning from Dunedin, via O-amaru and Timaru. Tho Port Piiio is duo here from Gisborne on February 1. The discharging of tho Koromiko’s coal is expected to bo completed by Wednesday, whon it is probable that she Will return to Newcastle. Mr Hatfield, who recently returned from active service, joined the Corinna at Lyttelton on Saturday as chief officer. The Kann-a finished the discharging of a part cargo of ooal from Newcastle last evening, and sailed for Westport, where sho will load ooal for Sydney for the Admiralty. The Katoa, which was.timed to leave Auckand or. Saturday night with a consignment of sugar, should arrive here to-morrow morning. Captain T. Couper, formerly of the John Anderson, joined the Storm, on Friday aa second officer. The Matatua will load at New Zoaland ports next month. Tho Shaw, Savill lir.or Mahana, after completing her cargo by loading 23,960 freight carcases of frozen meat at Napier, was* to leave that port on Saturday at .midnight for London, via Panama. Mr A. Gibson, of the Union Company's steamer Katoa, has been appointed Government inspector of seamen at Wellington, in. succession to Captain W. F. Clark, who lies boon appointed surveyor of ships. Mr Gibson holds a New Zoaland master’s certificate.

NEW ZEALAND SHIPPING COMPANY’S LINE. Ruapehu—A wireless message has been received from this steamar, advising that she is expected to arrive at Hobart on January 22. Koikoura, loaves Port Kemble, for Auckland on January 20. Ruahine, to leave Port Chalmers for Bluff on -January 20. Rimntaka, expected to leave I/yttclton for Port Chalmers on January 22. Paparoa, Homeward bound, loft Newport News on January 8. Waimoto, to leave London for New Zealand on January 22. Whakatano, from Montreal, via Auckland, was due at Wellington yesterday. MAUNGANUI AND MAKURA. It is understood that tho Maunganui will lcploce the Mokura on the Sydney-Auckland-Vancouver run for the two or threo months, while tho latter will bo out of commission. The Niagara now takos in oil at Honolulu, and it is presumed that the Makura, when converted, will do likewise. It is also stated that in tho near future the Tahiti will bo converted into an oil-oonsuming vessel. The work of re-conditioning and converting the Marama and Maunganui has been considerably delayed owing to a ehortable of suitable labour, and it. will be some time yet beforo either vessel will bo ready for 4ea. * SICK SEAMEN’S PAY. By the endeavours .of tho Federated Seamen’s Union, Now Zealand seamen who liavo been ashore in distant lauds through sick--1 jcss havo had a disability removed. A case arose recently in which a seaman on tho Waitcvmo was placed ashore at Calcutta through illness and loft there in • hospital. Ho deposited money with the Government Shipping Master there, drew some of it, and, on returning to Now Zealand in tho Waihora, understood that ho would receive tho balance on arrival hero. However, it was not forthcoming, tho money having been sont to the Board of Trade, London, although the conveyance oame to New Zealand. Tho Seamen’s Union took stops through the Marine ' Department to gpt the balance of the money remitted to New Zealand so that tho man could obtain it, and at tho same time the Board of Trade was requested to instruct its , officials at such ports to remit to New Zealand in future all wages and other moneys deposited on behalf of New Zoaland' seamen when invalided abroad from New Zealand ships. Tho Seamen's Union has now been informed by the Marine Department that it is in receipt of odvico from tho Board of Trade that arrangoments have been mado so that tho payment of tho balance duo to such seamen will bo made on arrival in New Zealand without previous reference to England for authority to do so. In tho caso of the seaman of tho Wajitomo, he was required to wait about, two years beforo he could get his money. The reform will be much appreciated by seafarers of Now Zoaland who go over■sea^

Tho Waitomo arrived at Singapore on Friday morning from Calcutta. She is expected to sail to-day for New Zealand ports, via Samarang and Banbury, and is duo at Dunedin about February 15. Nine vessels aro under overhaul at Port Chalmers at present, seven being Red Funnel steamers, namely, Maunganui, Marama, Paloona, Kurow, Wanaka, Kokiri and Karori. Work is greatly delayed owing to shortage of labour.
