RANGIORA MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Mr G. Day, S.M., presided at the Rangiora Magistrate’s Court yesterday. F. M'leagut, was fined 20s and costs 7s for driving his car through the town at an excessive speed, and Happy Mantelo, for riding his bicycle on a footpath, was fined 5s with is costs. James Quinn was charged with being drunk and with using obscene language. On the first charge he was convicted and discharged, and on the second was fined £3, with the alternative of fourteen days’ imprisonment. John Fahey, a Southbrook resident, for whom. Mr Kincaid appeared, was charged with the theft of a sitting hen and eleven eggs, valued at £2, the property of W. S. Richards. It was proved to the satisfaction of the Magistrate that the accused’s son, aged about twelve, when birdnesting, found the hen sitting on the eggs in a hedge, and took them home and placed them in a. coop some distance from the house without his father knowing anything about the matter. The information was dismissed. R. J- Taylor applied to have H- Murfitt. jun., bound over to keep the peace for the reason that, on December 17, defendant used insulting language towards him and threatened to brain him. with a bottle. Murfitt pleaded guilty and said he was drunk and knew nothing about the occurrence. The Magistrate did not consider the evidence warranted sureties being required, but he amended the information and fined defendant IDs, with costs 11s, for using insulting language.
