THE BUILDING TRADE.

[Per Press Association.} AUCKLAND, December 23. Preliminary matters in connection with a proposal to secure one big award to coyer various sections of the building trade were dealt with by the Conciliation Council to-day. If the proposal is adopted it is estimated that four thousand workers will be governed by the award. Considerably over one thousand employers and employees’ organisations have been cited. The workers affected and a rough estimate of the union membership are as follows : —Carpenters, 1400; furniture workers, 400; bricklayers,, 250; plumbers, 500; plasterers, 150; electricians, 300; stonemasons, 100; labourers, 1000. The Commissioner stated that counterproposals had been received from the employers. It was decided to visit Hamilton, Rotorua, Glsborno and Whangarei for the purpose of taking evidence. The sitting was adjourned till January 12.
