Yesterday’s river report stated that all the Canterbury rivers were clear.
The Government Tourist Office is keeping open in the evenings from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., to enable people who cannot got there during the day to obtain information and tickets for their holiday trips. At tho Auckland Supremo Court, Henry Curry, who was convicted of bigamy, having gono through tho form of marriage with a woman at Christchurch while his wifo was living in Australia, was sentenced to threo months’ imprisonment with hard labour.
At a special parade of the combined troops of tho Dominion Boy Scouts'in Christchurch and surrounding districts, t.o be held in Latimer Square on Saturday, his Excellency the Governor-Gene-ral will inspect the troops at 3.30 p.m. and afterwards will present the King’s Standard and other trophies. The troops will fall in at 3 p.m. sharp. The annual prize distribution of the School of Art will take place at eight o’clock to-morrow evening, in the Canterbury College Hall. Mr H. D. inland, chairman of the board, will present the prizes, and an address will to delivered by Mr S. E. M’Carthy, Sjvl. The proceedings will bo interspersed with music, aj&ir which the exhibition of students’ work will bo open.
A heavy bank of fog lay over New Brighton yesterday. From a distance it appeared like a tliick cloud lying along tho horizon, but at Now Brighton .it seemed as though tho sky was overcast, and the air was damp and misty. Tho sky was bright in the city, and at night it was clear and starlit until about ten o’clock, when a smoky-coloured fog spread over the city. On Friday afternoon the soldiers of tho Orthoprcdic Hospital were entertained by Mr and Mrs Lawrence at their home in Collingwood Street, New Brighton. Despite tho easterly wind a very pleasant time was spent in the sheltered grounds, many of the men enjoying a game of croquet. Glees and songs were given by the Misses Lawrence (3), Otley, Hunt and Mrs Ainsley, Mrs Shaw and Mrs Clancy Afternoon tea was provided by the Red Cross branch.
A suspected thief, a helpful civilian, and a speedy constable, were the principals in an exciting chase commencing in Armagh Street, on Tuesday. A man who had appropriated a cash box from a fruit shop was hotly pursued by a civilian. Sizing up the position as they hove into his view, Constable Taylor also gave chase. Excellent speed was made by all concerned- Fences were scaled or vaulted and other obstacles overcome betoro the constable's superior powers enabled him te arrest the fugitive, who appeared before Mr -V. G. Day, S.M., yesterday morning..
The prisoner, William Nicolai Clauson, alias Johnstone, who escaped from the Paparoa Prison at half-past eleven on Saturday morning last, /was recaptured at Dunsandol yesterday morning by Constables Slrino“and Tiffen, of tho Christchurch Police Force. These two had been on special duty seeking traces of tho escapee, and about twenty minutes past eight yesterday morning, as thoy wore leaving the Dnnsandel railway station, they noticed a man answering tho description of the escaped prisoner cycling along the main road towards the south. Thoy had only ono bicycle, and tlii s Constable T'iffon rode, while Constable Shine ran alongside, Clauson had no idea that he was being- pursued until tho constables got within about twenty yards of him, by which time -they bad covered a distance of fully a mile south of Dunsandel. When they drew alongside, the man tried to bluff them as to his identity, but otherwise gave no trouble. Clauson, who was known to one of the arresting constables, had been sentenced To five years’ imprisonment at Timaru for breaking nnd entering. He was brought to Christchurch bv motor-ear, and was lodged in the lock-up. Clauson will appear at Magistrate’s Court this morning. It is stated that when awaiting trial at Timaru. tho prisoner made a breakaway, and unheeding tho call of a warder in pursuit was fired at just as he was clambering over a fence. The shot was effective, and he was then recaptured.
