J.B.—Prior to the arrival of Europeans in . Now Zealand, iron and other metals were unknown to the Maoris, but when they saw tho good purposes to which iron could ho put, they applied the name “ maitai,” moaning " good.” when referring to iron and other hard metals. This word is derived from tho Polynesian 11 meitati,” which means “ good.”
