CRITICAL MINING OUTLOOK. Reports from Johannesburg state that the mining outlook, despite the recent appreciation in gold values, i» still regarded jus critical. Tho oliief cause of anxiety is tho enormously increased contributions required for the miners’ phthisis fund. It is now recognised that tho Government estimates are greatly below the mark, and it is urged in mining circles that the State must assume a substantial share of the new burden or many mines will stop producing. Tho Portuguese are manifesting considerable opposition to the proposed recruitment of tropical natives for mines \xk Portu&ueto tou'ite>"¥.
