SOUTH CRESCENT ROAD.
A conference of delegates representing the Christchurch City Council, Spreydon Borough Council, Christchurch Drainage Board and tho Christchurch 'Tramway Board was held in '.he City Council Library yesterday afternoon in connection with the proposed widening of that portion of South Crescent Road between Barry Street and Kipling Street, the filling of the drain known as Jackson’s Creek, and tho widening of a piece of road further on near Selwyn Street. The extent of road affected in the first instance is fivo chains sixty links, and in tho second it is about four chains. The delegates present were:—City Council —Messrs J. W. Beanland, F. Burgoyno and H. R. Smith (town clerk); Spreydon Borough Council — Messrs A. Manhire (Mayor) and W. R. Gahagan; Drainage Board—Messrs J. Down and E. Cuthbert (secretary); Tramway Board-—Hon J. Barr and Messrs D- Sykes and F. Thompson (secretary). . Mr Beanland was elected chairman, and explained th.it the four bodies were directly concerned in the South Crescent Road. At present some danger existed, as the tram line ran along the road by the fence. The widenjng would greatly improve tho tram route. fif e City Surveyor estimated the cost at about £4OO. He moved that tho work should be authorised, tlie co9t to be borne by the four bodies,. the City Council and Tramway Hoard each to bear one-third of the cost and the Spreydon Borough Council and Drainage Board each to pay one-sixth. He would promise that tho City Council would bear the cost of channelling. This would reduce the quota in thirds to about £lls.
It was finally agreed to adopt Mr Beanland’s suggestion, the Tramway Board’s quota being definitely named as £lls,'and the other contributors agreeing to share tho balance in the proportion already mentioned. In regard to the second suggestion, to widen part of South Crescent Road, near Selwyn Street, a strip of private land six feet wide was offered, and it was requested that a six-foot fenco should be erected. The tramway delegates were not concerned and withdrew. It was estimated that the cost would ho about £3OO.
Mr Gahagan said that as a member of the Spreydon School Committee he was well aware of the danger of the spot so far as school children were concerned. The presence of the creek and condition of tho road were a menace to the children.
It was stated that three property owners would benefit by tho alterat’on and delegates did not favour the erection of a fenco (costing £4O) at the expense of tho public bodies. Mr Beanland proposed that the work should bo sanctioned, the City Council to pay £l5O and the balance (about £110) to be paid by the Spreydon Borough Council and the Drainage Board in equal parts. Tho motion was carried, and on Mr Gahagan’s proposal it was agreed to allow property owners £3 a chain towards the cost of fencing.
