A DISGRACEFUL SCENE.

One of the most disgraceful incidents in Wanganui for a considerable time past occurred in the Avenue lato this afternoon, when a constable endeavoured to arrest a returned Alaori soldier who was refused admission to a hotel The Maori forcibly resisted, and a big crowd, which included a number of other Natives, quickly assembledThe constable clung to his man, but was hampered by a section of the crowd which had appeared, a human whirlpool eddying round the storm centre. Another Maori, egged on by the crowd, rushed in and got Constable O’Donoghuo by the throat. The constable managed to free himself and commandeered a private motor-car, into which he tried to put the Alaori. Appeals for assistance were unheeded for some time, but eventually a bystander came _ forward and another constable arrived. A European in soldier’s uniform mounted the footboard of the car and threatened the driver with violence if he did not drive on. At the same time a pleasant-faced, rotund Alaori was trying to cut one of the back tyres with a knife.
