FORGED BANK NOTES.

APPEARANCE IN THE CITY. Two of tlie stolen and forged National Bank notes have been detected in Christchurch, and it is feared that a systematic attempt is being made to put them in circulation through the medium of small shopkeepers and people in suburban areas. The puhlio are therefore warned to scrutinise closely all pound notes on the National Bank. If they bear the date January 1, 1918, they are valueless, and a person in possession of one of them has no chance of recovering his money, as the bank will not honour the notes. The bundle of notes was stolen from the vessel in Wellington on which they were consigned to the Bank in Wellington. The notes were then unsigned, but the thieves forged the signatures and circulated a number of the notes. The hank has issued no genuine notes of January 1, 1918, so that this is the best means of detecting the forgery.
