SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES. The: Waimate Racing Club will hold its annual fixture to-day. The chib is awkwardly situated so far as Christchurch patronage is concerned, as the nature of the train service necessitates a three days’ trip for anyone who desires to attend the meeting. For this reason it is unlikely that many visitors will go from this end of: the province. The difficulties of transit are doubtless also accountable for the small number of Riccarton horses engaged, only three stables beiiig represented, J, M’Combe having a team of four, while P. M’Grath and F. D. Jones have one each. The fields are of fair size, and as the quality is very even, there should be some interesting sport. A telegram from Auckland states that the hurdle racer Gluterina died while on a train yesterday, in the course of a journey from Te Aroha to Eller sljo. >

Nominations for the Hororata Racing Club’s meeting close on Friday, at 5 p.m., at the G.J.C. rooms.
