NEWS AND NOTES. Nominations for the Methven Racing Club's meeting will close at eight o'clock to-night. The spring ; meeting of the South Canterbury 'Jockey Club has been postponed indefinitely, on account of the influenza epidemic Mr C.W. Raid, who died on Thursday night at his residence in St Albans, was a prominent figure in Christchurch business circles,- having been a member of tho firm of Pyne and Co., stock and station agents, for a number of years, while he Had interested himself in various patriotic objects, the relief of the Belgians having, claimed his special attention. He was also widely known and highly respected in racing circles. While a resident of the district he was closely identified with the North Otago Jockey Club, filling the office of president for several years. Soon after he settled in Christchurch he was elected to the committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club, of which body he remained a valued member up till his death. Though his practical association with breeding and racing was not so extensive as that of two of his brothers, Mr J. B. Reid and Mr J. P. Reid, the deceased gentleman had figured successfully as .an owner. ■ Skirl, by Martian—Reel, was one animal who carried his colours, and during the last few years he alwavs had something in training in F. D. Jones's s£able at Riccarton. Kilrea (Kilbroney—Arai-te-Urn) and her sister. Kilalla,'were smart performers in his interests, Kilrea's successes includinc the Dunedin Guineas. Judaea, a two-year-old by Solferino— Hebrew Maid, was racing at Riccarton last week, while he purchased a couple of youngsters at last week's yearling sales.

The Rakaia sportsman, Mr W. Morland, has not taken an active part, in his favourite pa s tiine lately, but lie may be expected to again figure prominently at trotting fixtures before long, as ho is handling some two and three-year-oids which be hopes to have ready to race before the end of the season. Mr Morlaud patronised the imported sire, Logan Pointer, "very freely for a couple of years/and be, speaks highly of the stock by the. American pacer. This season the two-mild record holder, Country Belle (Wild Moor—Bonnie Bell) has a colt to Logan Pointer, and visits Nelson Bingen. Curfew Bell (Wildwood —Bonnie Bell) has: a filly and Queen H. (King Harold—Lilly H.) a colt to Logan Pointer,* to whom Feudal Chimes (Lord Chancellor—Curfew Bell) is due to foal. These three mares will be mated with Brent Locanda. Statistics compiled up to the end of October 31 shewed The Welkin at the head of the winning sires in Australia } with £9116, followed by Kenilworth £7731 and Linacre £6627.

Venerable, by Achilles—Moriarda, won the Spring Stakes, weight fonjige, at the Queensland Turf Club's meeting this month. Red Pennant, another New Zealand-bred horse, was among the unplaced lot. On the same day Terentia, by Bezonian—Ou'lture, was suc-t cessful in the Hopeful Stakes for two-year-olds. •

With the object of obviating, as far ns possible, foul riding at the spring meeting of the Victoria Racing- Club, the chairman arranged for a fourth stipendiary steward and an additional clerk of the course to' act during the four days of the fixture.

The favourites were beaten in every event on the first and second days of the Victoria Racing Club's spring meeting.
