AGRICULTURAL SHOW.
TIMARU. [FE(W Ouß COHRESPONDENT.] TIMARU, October ?- n .
The hftjy-third show under the - pices of th« Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association was opened to-day under favourable weather conditions. There was only a moderate attendance, and, except the sheep classes, little judging was done. The entries totalled 787, against 904 last year and 850 in 1916. Horscs showed a fairly heavy falling off. In the she op classes competition was not as strong as at many previous shows at Timaru, and the absence from the catalogue- of the names of several of South Canterbury’s prominent breeders was noted with keen regret. Notwithstanding relatively weaker entries. however, the quality of the exhibits shows aio deterioration, the high standard of pjast years being maintained in every particular. In the English Leicester classes there was no competition, ull the entries being in the name of Mr E. Kellamd. As usual, his sheep are of a noticeably fine typo. For many years ths New Zealand and Australian Land Company, _ Moeraki, has specialised in Lincolns with oonspicuous success, and at all ihe Dominion’s leading shows the representatives of the famous stud acquit thems&lves well. The company claimed all the entries in this section! to-day, the high, uniform standard i'f past years being maintained iw every particular. Mr Rupert Parry’s entries .of Shropshire® at today’s show tha only ones penned, afford ample proof that his eye for the perfect sheep i 3 as keen and accurate as m past years. Although weak in numbers, the South-downs were excellent in quality, and all the entries were in the name of Mr L. Mathias. In th© Ryeland classes, Mr F. Hayhurst, the sole exhibitor, showed some very attractive sheep. The New Zealand and Australian Land Company, as in Lincolns, claimed the whole iof the exhibits in, the Corriedala classes, the representation of this popular breed being a very fine one. The merino classes failed to attract any entries, although there was a time when this breed formed strong classes at Timaru. The fat Bheep and lamb classes elicited fairly strong come° n following is the prize-list, the number of entries in. each class being given in parentheses:— SHEEP.
