SEDITIOUS TENDENCY.
[Pjm Press Association.] WELLINGTON, October 29. At tho Magistrate's Court, t>avid Griffin and John Charles Troy : were charged that they did cause to be published, in an advertisement' in " New Zealand Truth," a seditious utterance in the words, "We presume you axe now aware both the above-named Irishmen have been sentenced to eleven months' hard labour for publishing articles dealing with Ireland."' Mr Macassey, for the Crown, referred to the prosecution of and Cummins in Dunedin respecting an article in tha "Green Ray/' and said the advertisement referred to the article, and, ha contended, applauded it. Sir John Findlay, for the defence, said the advertisement was a genuine appeal for. funds for the maintenance of the wife and children of Cummin i, and did no more than explain why the men were punished. „ • Tho Magistrate, Mr Frazer, said whether the words were used intention-, ally or not, the tendency was seditious, and for that reason he was bound to enter a-conviction, but he did not intend to impose a heaw penalty. Each defendant was fined £5. ." -•
