ST JOHN AMBULANCE.

PRESENTATION OF CERTIFICATES. Tho annual meeting of the Canterbury and TVcst Comst Centro of the St John Ambulance Association was held la6t night at the i.iVi.CA., Mr A. E. G. Rhodes, chairman of committees, presiding over a good attendance. Tiie annual report of the association stated that nineteen classes of instruction m first aid to the injured, homo nursing and hygiene were formed, in the centre during the year. The number of those who attended courses of not less than four lectures, including members of tho St John Ambulance Brigade who attended corps lectures, was 578, as compared with 1067 in 1916-17; 466 were entitled to certificates, as compared with 834 in 1916-17. Of these, 72 were entitled to tho medallion and 104 to the label, as compared with 97 and 84 respectively in the previous year, During the year the motor ambulance provided by tbe racing clubs of Christchurch was put in commission. " Ambulance calls continued to increase, 686 cases being attended by the motor and horse-drawn vehicles in tho period under review, as compared with Ell in the previous twelve months. In a great number of necessitous oases no charge had bepn made. Tho construction of another mo or ambulance had been put in hand, through the efforts of tho Christchurch Divisions (men and women) of the St John Ambulance Brigade and Mr R. A. Hnudiaides. Regret was expressed at the deaths of Captain H. McClelland Inglis, N.Z.M.C., and Mr W. R. L. Esselborn. A public depot had been established at the Poet Office, Marshland which brought the total number of depots now established in Christchurch and surounding districts up to 88. Red Cross work wns still being vigorously carried bn by joint committees of tho association and tho New Zealand branch of the British Red Cross Society. Up to May 81, 1918, the centre, since the outbreak of war, had forwarded goods of the value of £134,173, and remitted X93'i!49 10s 4d in cash for Red Cross purnoses in the various theatres of war. 1 In moving the adoption of the report, the chairman congratulated the association on Ihe successful year experienced, and also extended congratulations to all who had gam.d certificate, He spoke in detail cd the work of the association, and remarked tnat tne ladies had done splendid voluntary service in connection with tre brigade, the bulk of whose Lalanc°“shoet (which showed the association to be in an excellent position)'were adopted. co in Captain W. So many men had gone from tbe ranks that tho brigade was in a low state, and recruiting was difficult on account of the shortage of men generally in the country. Ihat the work was carried on at all was duo to w»y_ m which the nursing divisions had undertaken duties usually carried out by tho men. The brigade had also done a gtroal amount of work in raising money for patriotio purposes. The district had raised £7050 l"s, made and forwarded 28,763 articles for hospitals, etc. 57 members were on active service, 20 nursing oisters were in hospitals in tbe’district, and 69 members received the voluntary workers’ badge. New divisions had been formed at Erunrer, Miilerton and Blackball. A nummary of divisions showed that thero were eight ambulance and seven x.ursing divisions, the personnel of which was 60 officora and 267 of other ranks. Two hundred and twenty-one had passod the annual examination. The number of drills and practices held totalled 390, and the number of cases attended to by brigade members was 1363.

The roport, which embraced the Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast districts, was adopted. Bhcdes (Lady of Grace of the Order of fit John), the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr H. Holland), Colonel R. H. Rhodes, Bishop Julius, Bishop Btrodie, and the Rev Dr Erwin; committee, Mesdames H. H. Smith and Watkins, Miss Sprosen, Hon J. A. Borthwick, Lieutenant-Colonel P. B. Creswoll. Captain W. W. M’Kinncy, Dts J. R. Thomas and M. G. Louisson, and Messrs A E. G. Rhodes, C. J. Ronaldson, J. A. Flcsher, H. Thomas, H. J. Hoddinott, H. In Bowker, jun., and \V. A. Gresson. Mrs A. FI G. Rhodes presented tho swards conferred upon Lieutenant-Colonel F B Creswell, V.D., Major J. R. Thomas' Captain M. G, Louisson, Jj.Z.M.C., Mr P. G-. Ritchie and Mr W Pearce by the Grand Priory of the Order of ,St John, an recognition of their services to the association.
