SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES. Tho Metropolitan Trotting Club haS received a very satisfactory list of nominations for the New Zealand Trotting Cup. The sixteen horses engaged represent the very best class in the Dominion, and even the absence of nominations from any North Island candidates will not affect the strength o f the field. Handicaps are due on. Sep. tember 9.

A meeting of the stewards of the Amberley Racing Club was held on Tuesday, Mr O. B. Starky presiding. The Course Committee reported that the course was in first-class order for the annual race meeting, to be held on September 12. It was decided to request the Domain Board to clear up the branches in the saddling paddock that had been broken down during ‘ the snowstorm. Officers were appointed to act as judicial, starting and gate stewards. Three new members were elected. It was decided to start the first race at 11.35 a.m., and the last at 4.5 p.m., thus giving visitors plenty time to catch the Christchurch tram at Greeney’s Road. The stewards wish to deny a rumour that there was a likelihood of the meeting being abandoned owing to the inability of the Railway Department to carry the horses. Satisfactory arrangements have been made for the carriage of horses to Amberley and back on race day.

The committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club has approved the conditions of the New Zealand Cup. The stake is £2OOO, the same as last year, but the penalty conditions have been modified. Last year the winner of any race, after declaration of weights, of the value of 160 sovs, had to carry 31b extra; of any race or races of the value of 200 sovs. 51b; 300 bovs. 71b; and 500 sovs, 101 d. ’ This vear, howj» ever, the first penalty is 51b for the winner of a race or races of the collective value of 250 sovs, while winners of 350 sovs incur 71b, and of 600 sovs 101 b extra. The alteration is one which will meet with general approval, as it will enable owners to race their Cup horses more liberally, without endangering their Riccnrton prospects, while it will oenefit owners in another direction, by removing the chief obstacle in the way of increased stakes at many of the early spring meetings.
