ORTHOPEDIC HOSPITAL.

THE ADDITIONS TO THE BUILDING. The special committee of the Hospital Board set up to consider the establishment of an orthopedic unit at the Christchurch Hospital reported yesterday that the temporary accommodation to be erected consisted of the workshops for basket-making, a wooden building in the area between wards five and six, the full length of the area and 26ft wide. This, it was proposed, should be used for the baths, electro-thera-peutic and balneological rooms. Another building in the area between wards four and five, the full length of the area with a width of 25ft would be erected as a gymnasium. Besides these it would be necessary to put another storey on the building at present used as quarters for the resident medical officers of the hospital, and towards this the Defence Department had allocated the sum of £SOO. This building would be of a permanent character and the accommodation provided would undoubtedly be necessary to the board in a comparatively short time. Attached to this, provision was being made for a common room for the use of the medical officers. The accommodation for dining-room and all purposes at present was a room about 14ft by 14ft. This was wholly inadequate, even for the present staff. The. board would need to find the difference between the total cost of this building and the £SOO allocated by the Defence Department, the amount being about £BOO. The reappropriation of the old residency was to be put in hand, and the basket-makers’ workshop would he attached to that building in preference to the site previously chosen. The plans had been drawn and forwarded to the Defence Department, and tho Minister of Hospitals for approval/ The report was adopted.
