MILITARY SERVICE.

The First Canterbury Military Service Board held a sitting at Rangiora yesterday; prerent—Messrs J. S. Evans (chairman), J. D. Milltbu and H. E. Bobbins. Captain Pilkington was military representative. The jrtangiora Borough Council, represented by the Mayor. (Mr C. I. Jennings), appealed on behalf of John Henry Downes, gasworks manager, who. had been appointed to tho position in October last., The Mayor staged that the council did not intend to appeal for any. of its "employees but the gasworks manager, whose services they considered to be most esssntial in iho public interests. Tiro chairman said tho main point tor be considered was whether when the application was made there wero not applicants for tb.2 position ineligible for military Bervice. The caso was adjourned till next sitting for information on the point. Sine ,dio adjournments wero granted in the following cases :—John R. Blackett, blacksmith, Leithfield; Matthew A. Thomas, farmer, Amberley, on behalf of Matthew H. Thomas; William Boyco, farmer, Amberley; Harold B; JJalzied, farmer, Amberley, .to be reviewed in threo-months; John Egan, farmer, Leonard Eitzgibbon, farmer, North Loburn, to'be reviewed in February; Dougaid M'Laron; farmer, Cheviot (Cl); Robert JP. Wheeler, (Cl); Arthur T. Giles, farmer, Ohoka, to be reviewed within three months; Ernest Alfred Woodfield, farmer and shearer, Horrelville, to be reviewed after harvest'; Thomas C. Cooper, farmer, Balcairn, to be reviewed within thres months; John Henry Jones, farmer, Scargill, and Roderick Mathoson, farmer, Cheviot, to be reviewed in January; 8. A. Wild, farmer, Hawarden, on behalf of Albert S. Crowe, to be reviewed within three months. The appeals of John Walker Strachan, threshing machino proprietor, Kaiapoi, and Froderick B. Reoves, farmer, Saltwater Creek, were adjourned for a report from the Efficiency Board. The appeal of John Smith, farmer, West Eyreton, was dismissed, but time was extended till tho November draft.

John Kobinson, farmer, West Eyreton, appealed on behalf of his ploughman, Ernest Fulton Campbell. The appsal was dismissed, but time was extended 10 the October draft to allow of ploughing acd sowing being completed. . ■ '• . Tho oase" of Albert Hendy, coal merchant, Eangiora, was ..further adjourned to tho October sitting. The appeal of William Ritchie, farmer, Sefton, on behalf of hiß Bon, Stanley E. Ititchie, was struck out, having been entered too late.

Mrs Franoes H. Alexander, aerated water manufacturer, Kaiapoi, appealed on behaif of her son, who assists in her business. Xhe oase was adjourned for an application to be made to the Soldiers' Financial Assistance Board.

Tho appeal of Angus Cameron, farmer, Culverden, on behalf of his employee, William Lambie, for an extension of time till November, was granted. i William H. Parsons, Loburn, was allowed time till the January draft. Hugh Fhzsimmons, farmer, Mina, was granted leave for his eon, Hugh Fitzsimmoiis, till November. An appeal by Herbert G.' Trustrum, woollen mills employee, Kaiapoi, was adjourned : till December.

Tho adjourned appeal of John W. Foster, farmer, Eangiora, on behalf of his son, was further adjourned till after harvest. The case of David W. Wilson, Cheviot, •was adjourned for medical examination of appellant. The appeals cf the following reservists who Had been clasfed-C2 were adjourned sine die: —William J. Alien, Kothorham; Eeruard J. Archer, Woodend; Henry B. Archer, Soulhbrook; Robert H. Bailey, Loburn; Albert E. Brooker, Hawardcn; Walter J. Burnett, Cheviot; Svdney J. Dark, Okuku; Jack Emanuel, Boiherham; Albert E. Evans,, Spotswood; John FitzgibbOn, Eangiora; Charles F. Hall, Eest Oxford; George M'lntosb, Southbrook; Thomas Power, West Eyroton; John H. Vette, Southbrook, and Arthur J. Watson, Amberloy.
