Dr. Thacker, M.P., whs a passengei by .the Moeraki, which arrived at Wellington from Sydney yesterday. A Press Association message states that Mr J. W. Ellis, first Mayor of tho amalgamated boroughs of Frankton Junction and Hamilton, died yesterday.

Lieutenant E. W. J. Millton, of the Thirteenth (North Canterbury aud Westland) Regiment, has been appointed temporary A.D.O. to his Excellency the Governor-General. » Mr A. C. R. Anderson, of the staff of the Land Office, Christchurch, lias been transferred on promotion to Auckland, and yesterday the other members of the staff met him and expressed their best , wishes for his prosperity. Mr W. H. Skinner, Commissioner of Crown Lands, said that regret was felt at losing Mr Anderson, and he presented Mr Anderson with a travelling bag, suitably inscribed. Mr Anderson thanked tho donors for their kindness. , In a recent letter to his mother,. Mrs A. Hobbs, 53. Phillip Street, Lin wood, her son, Rifleman S. H. Hobbs (Hector), mentioned that he had been offered a commission, but has decided not to accept it as he may take a position in England, whero he is at present. Rifleman Ijlobbs left with the 3rd Battalion of the Rifle Brigade, and has been twice wounded, first at the Somme, and later at Passcliendaele. He was a keen footballer and cricketer and played for Merivalo Rugby team. Advice has been received by Mrs WII. Lylean, Staveley, that her oldest son, Trooper H. D. Lylean, has been awarded the Military MedaJ, for carrying a wounded man under heavy five. He also received tho Croix do Guerre for gallantry in tho field, which was the second honour conferred upon him in five weeks. Trooper Lylean, who left with tho Twenty-eighth Reinforcements, was_ presented with the decorations in April by Colonel Chaytor.
