PERSONAL NOTES.
The reran)as of the late Gunner Joseph N. Jennings, who died at the Featherston Military Camp on Monday, from cerebro-spinal meningitis, were buried in the Linwood Cemetery yesterday afternoon. The deceased was accorded a military funeral, the coffin being: borne from the residence of the soldier’s mother, 4-18, Worcester Street, on a gun carriage, and covered by the Union Jack. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev O. Fitzgerald, of Holy Trinity Church, Avonsidc. A firing party from, the N. under Sergeant Burberry, fired three volleys over the grave. One of the Invest attendances ever seen in the Ashuurton cemetery assembled on Wednesday afternoon to .pay a last tribute of respect to Bombardier J. W. H. Watson, who died in the Christchurch Hospital on Monday. He was accorded a military funeral. Lieutenant M. Blathwayt, N.Z.M.R., O. areas 37 and 38, was in command. The cor to,go was headed by a firing party composed of members of the 2nd Regiment, in cliargo of Sergeant-Major Wallers, then followed a strong force of returned soldiers, High School and Hampstead School pupils and the Eighth South Canterbury Regimental Band. The pall-bearers were returned soldiers. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev G. Frost, and at its conclusion three volleys were fired over the grave and SergeantTrumpeter D. Moore (a retained soldier) sounded the “Last Post.
The Ashburton War Relief Committee, at its meeting on Tuesday afternoon passed a motion of sympathy to Mr J. Watson and family in the death of their son, Bombardier J. W. H. Watson.
Advice has been received that Private J. H. Sherlock, formerly linotype expert for the “ Ashburton Guardian,” lias again been wounded, private Sherlock, who left with the Twentyeighth Reinforcements, was a member of the Machine-gun Seotion.
