SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES. A strong contingent of Christchurchtrained horses went south last week for the winter meeting of the Forbury Park Trotting Club, winch was hold on Saturday, but they did not faro so well as usual, the only winners being Billy Parole and Pitaroa, the latter owned in the North Island. A feature of the day’s racing was tho success of horses from South Otago and’Southland. Koraki started off well fof tho southerners by winning the Amateur Handicap; Dora Derby won tho next event, the Innovation Handicap ;• Silver Shoo was first and Nihilist second in the Beach Handicap; while in the Domain Handicap. they filled all the places with Boyal Step, Eros and South Star. In the St Clair Handicap, tho twomile harness race for unhoppled trotters, at the Forbury Park meeting on Saturday, tho Dunedin-owned horse. Royal Rothschild, finished third, aftei galloping a good part of the journey. After tho race tho Judicial Committee discussed the performance and decided to distance Royal ' Rothschild for galloping, awarding third place to Patard. D. 0. Jones, the trainer ,of Royal Rothschild, who also rode him, was suspended from riding and driving till the end of tho season.

Among the competitors at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday was the imported horse El Carbine. Ho came from America a few years ago with a big reputation, which he failed to live up to in.his early efforts in tho Dominion, owing- to faulty gait. For some time past lie has 1 been in Dunedin, under the care of G. Grant, and in Saturday’s race, his first for eighteen months, ho trotted in very satisfactory style, showing that there was still a possibility of reproducing the pace TlO was credited with when purchased at a high figure in America.

There was very little work of interest at Riccarton on Saturday, most of the horses who were racing lit Ashburton on Thursday having an easy time. A few representatives from local stables claim engagements at the North Otago meeting, and they will provide the eliief interest during tho next week or so.

Kirkby has arrived at Riccarton from tho North Island, and T. IT. Gillett will get him ready to carry Captain J. S. Barrett’s colours in cross country events at the winter meetings. A. M’Anlny will shortly tako in hand an. Australian bred yearling, purchased for Mr A. W. Rutherford bv M. Hobbs, at the Sydney yearling sales. He is a chestnut colt by Flavus—Many Colours by Medallion—Blue and Gold, by Grand Flaneur. The colt is a brother to Flaxen, who was tfie best tliree-year-old of his season in Queensland, where ho won classic and weight-for-age honours, while later in his career lie also won races in New South Wales. T. 11. GJlett has taken Achilledes and Rosevear to the Marlborough Racing Club’s meeting, where War Tax and Xanthos, who have been at Ricenrfor some time, will also be racing this week.

Though Bore lias not* done much jumping lately, his clieht lameness has not interfered with his work on the tiacks and he has been responsible for 1 some very attractive gallops. Ho is a bold fencer, who has taken naturally to the big obstacles, and lie looks like playing a prominent part in any crosscountry events he mav contest during his trip to the North Island. A good deal of misapprehension exists with reference to the incident which occurred in the New Zealand Trotting Derby, and which resulted in J. Bryce being suspended for the remainder of tho day for interfering with Cole Nut. It was stated at the time that, in ad-

dition to the suspension of Bryce, the horses from, his stable were debarred from fulfilling their later engagements at the meeting. This was not quite the effect of the decision. The Judicial Committee certainly intended that Zaja, racing in Bryce’s own interests, should forfeit her engagement, but .the resolution did not apply to the other horses from his stable, these being Untwood Junior in the Autumn Handicap, General Wilkes and Moorland in the Brooklyn Handicap, and General Wilkes and Beckon in the Final Handicap. Bryce was himself responsible for tho withdrawal of this lot, as lie scratched them when the decision of the Judicial Committee was communicated to him.
