“INGOMAR.”
PROFESSOR TRUEBLOOD'S RECITAL.
The concert hall at the Y.M.C.A. building was filled to overflowing on Saturday evening on the occasion of Professor Trueblood’s third literary recital, the subject of which was the play “ Ingomar,” described by the lecturer as one of the finest dramas in the classical style written since the time of Shakespeare. The Mayor of Christchurch presided apd briefly introduced Professor Trueblood. Professor Trueblood, after stating that the play was of German authorship, that it dated from the middle of the last century, and had been later admirably translated into English, gave some details of the performance of this drama on the American stage; and forthwith proceeded with a recital of judiciously selected excerpts from the principal scenes. The various characters of the drama—lngomar, a brave and manly-hearted mountaineer; Polidor, a miserly widower; Partheiiia, a young Greek girl, imbued with unusual spirit and courage, and others, were finely portrayed. Touches of humour were skilfully used, and the story presented in a kindly, sympathetic manner which held the interest and attention of all throughout the recital. At the conclusion a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Professor Trueblood. A collection taken up in aid of the Y.M.C.A. War Fund realised a substantial sum.
