NEWS AND NOTES.

The five-year-old gelding, Master Florence, by Bunyan.—Scotch Thistle, is the latest addition to F. Holmes's team. He was formerly trained in Auckland, where he did a lot of racing as a throe-year-old, with moderate success.

Disdainful, who was galloping with oreat brilliancy earlier in the season, has not shown so much freedom since she resumed work after a spell. All the progeny of Lady Disdain have been similarly troubled on going into commission, and in the case of Disdainful it is hoped she will bo galloping as freely as ever again before the season i s much further advanced. Most of the old horses in the Chokemore Lodge team have had n dose of physic, and they woro treated to an easy time yesterday. The movements of the team during the nest -week or two axe at present uncertain- The stable is represented at the Dunedin and Wanganui meetings, which arc held too close together to permit of both trips being -undertaken, and it jyiii probably depend on the treatment thoy receive from the two handicappers whether they will go to Wingatui or Wanganui. "VV- M'Donadd has taken Malvolia in hand again, and the Menschikoff marc looks well after her spell.

The progeny of Spalpeen made a great showing on the two days of the Takapuna, Jockey Club's meeting. Ditto and Fionnuala each captured a double, and Munster was another winner for him, besides being third, whilo Glendalough secured a second and a third.

The Gluten gelding, Tenacious, who won the Waiwera Hurdle Handicap at Takapuna on Monday, was a member of the team of jumpers which E. J. Rae took to Australia last winter. Since his return he has raced very unluckily, his record, prior to this week, being' three times second and twice third.

A. Goodman is expected to arrive on Friday with Hose Pink and Preface After racing at Ricearton on Saturday they will go on to Wingatiu, to iulnl engagements at the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting.

Trentbam Rose ha* broken down and the speedy All Red mare will have to be given a lengthy spell. \. yearling colt by Autumnus—Rone, by Multifid—-Miss Frisco, lias recently been broken in at Tren thorn by A. Goodman.

The Riverton Racing Club received five applications for the position ot handicapper, and. Mr A... Tones, ol \Yin~ ton, received tho appointment.

A Press Association message received last night from Sydney states that Desert Gold's appearance on the track created many favourable comments. Sho impressed critics as having abnormal vitality, resembling Oarhta when at her best.

It is reported from Sydney that the Calibre gelding, Silent Way, has been put into'training again after a lengthy spell. Mr J. CN. Griggs castoff is a good but unlucky horso as far as his Australian performances go, as he has won recognition from the handicappers without, actually getting his head in front at tho judge's box-

The imported horse, Polydamon, has had a big reputation since he first went into training at Ellerslie, and ho justified it, to some extent, at the summer meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, by winning tho Christmas Handicap and running second to King Lupin m 'the Summer Cup- He let his admirers clown badly in the Takapmna Cup on, Saturday, hut probably the course did not suit himy and he may be. soon to. better advantage when he makos another appearance at Ellerslie. One of the features of the racing at. the Takapuna Jockey Club's meeting was the form shown by Fionnuala. On the first day. starting at. an outside price, sho boat a. fair field in tho Stewards' Handicap, six furlongs- The performance did not impress the onlookers regarding her prospects over a longer journey, however, as on Monday she was again poorly fancied for the Jockev Club Handicap, decided ovcr_ a mile, two furlongs and a half. She met some useful performers, but boat them all comfortably, and she is evidently better now than at any previous stage' of her career. She has done a good deal of racing, with fair success.. bat the fields that finished behind her at Takapuna, wer3 quite the best sho has beaten so far- She is a seven-year-old maa-e by Spalpeen from Waimangu, bv Explosion—Steptast, by St Hippo from Stepfeldt, the dam of so many hick-class performers. Glendalough, a successful performer over hurdles in Auckland this season, is a sister o* Fionnuala.
