In embroidering initials on household linen, especially for a newly furnished house, one should try to make the style of the monogram agree with the general appearance* of the room in which it is to be used. Thus the square, heavy letters arc suitable for a room in plain style; long, delicately-curved letters for'the flat in Empire or Chippendale mode, and round, open letters tor the baby's simple, nursery. This may sound somewhat far-fetched, but it is surprising how conspicuous embroidered serviettes and towels may become when they are out of harmony with the other appointments. GLOVE CLEANING AT HOME. Glove cleaning costs so little that it is really best to let professionals do the work, but here are some ''home methods. For kid gloves make a strong lather of white soap and milk. Put one glove on, and with a soft piece of new flannel apply the lather, rubbing gently towards the finger ends. When clean, remove the lather with a little warm milk, dry, blow the fingers out, and put the gloves in the sun. Before they are completely dry put them on. This ensures a perfect shapo. White silk gloves can be cleaned with fuller's earth. Put the gloves on and " wash " with the powder two or three times, removing them and shaking the soiled powder out. White kid is cleaned by being rubbed as described above with cream of tartar, Good snede gloves can be cleaned by being rubbed with very fine oatmeal. Brush it off with a soft nail-brush. Stains, if any. should bo first removed with a little benzine. French kid gloves are cleaned by being "washed" on your hands with spirits of turpentine. Dry out of doors. TOMATO RECIPES. Tomato Chutney.—Four lb tomatoes, lib sugar. Jib dates, Jib sultanas, Jib almond's, 1 bottle vinegar (large), ilb onions, 2o« salt, loz ginger, loz garlic, and £oz chillies. Clean all the ingredients by scraping (not washing), then pound altogether except the tomatoes, along with a little of the-vinegar. When wolf mixed, add the tomatoes cut up and the vinegar, boil in a saucepan for four hours: When cold, bottle and seal. Tomato Sauce.—lngredients: lib of tomatoes, two shallots, ono. bay leaf, one sprig thyme, ten peppercorns, loa butter, 2oz lean ham, ono tablespoonful vinegar. Method: Melt the butter in a stewpan, add the ham cut small, and the shallots chopped. Cook over fire, but do not brown. Now add seasoning herbs, peppercorns and tomatoes sliced, stir altogether and boil for twenty minutes, or until well reduced. Pass the sauce through a tammy cloth, warm up, season, and serve. Time: From thirty to thirty-five minutes. Average cost,*7d or Bd. Green Tomato Pickle.—The following is an excellent pickle recipe:—Tak%

equal quantities of green tomatoes and onions, cut in slices, and put in an earthenware vessel, in layers with salt sprinkled between, let stand overnight. In the morning drain nearly all the liquor off, and boil for twenty minutes with vinegar, not quite covering them, and spices. Put all spices in a muslin bag., To 121 b each of tomatoes and onions put 2oz cloves, 2oz allspice, 2oz ginger, 3oz peppercorns, one teaspoonFill of cayenne pepper, six tablespoonfuls of sugar. Fit for use as soon as cold.

Tomato Jam.—To each pound of ripo tomatoes add lib of sugar, also one lemon. Pour boiling water over the tomatoes, and let stand until the fruit starts to crack, and tlien peel all the skin off. Cut lemons fine, also cut the tomatoes, put all together, and bcil for two hours and a half slowly.
