BOROUGH COUNCILS.

NEW BRIGHTON. The New Brighton Borough Council met last evening; present—the Mayor (Mr F. Kibblewhite), and Councillors C. H. Winuv, E. Leaver, J. Buxton, C. Israelsoa, F. Sincock, R. Browning and F. H. Christian. Prior to the opening of business, a reso ution of sympathy was carried to Councillor A. M. Chivers on the death of his father. As Councillor Chivers is leaving the borough for an indefinite period on military service, he was granted three months’ leave of absence. Permission was granted the Bowling Chib to erect a notice board at the entrance to Mafeking Street on Beresford Street. A letter from Mr J. P. Whatman, win* has charge of the requisition for the North Esplanade Road, was received, and will lo considered by the combined committee of tho council, when Mr Whatman will be invited to attend. A telegram from, the Secretary of Marine and Mr Cyrus Williams, engineer to the Harbour Board, was received, indicating that the area to be leased for the proposed marine solar salt works would be decided at the next meeting of the Harbour Board on February 6. On the recommendation of tho Work* Committee, after a conference with Inspectors Nicoll and Schon, it waa resolved:—(l) That in all cases of house drains, not less than 4-inch pipes are to be used; (2) that in all cases where slop water goes into drains, all down pines leading into drama are to be trapped; (3) that three ratepayers be given seven days’ notice to comply with notices reoeived from Inspector Schon. The treasurer’s report for the fortnight ending January 25 showed tho receipts to have been £705 ?s 7d and the expenditure £6B 7s lOd. Building permits had been issued to the value of £3lB. The bank balance was shown to be in debit £275 18s, and the temporary loan account in debit £1785. Councillor Browning expressed thanks on behalf of the Gala Committee to the oouncil staff for their valuable assistance on Gala Day. On the recommendation of the FireBrigade Committee, it was decided to invite applications in the doily newspapers for the position of a oounoil employee, part of whoso duty it would be to take charge of the engine at fires and to keep it in good order and condition. On the recommendation of the Finance Committee it was decided to call upon an owner in Keppel Street to remove a tent forthwith. On the motion of Councillor Leaver, it was decided to draw the attention of the Police Department once more to the stray horse nuisance in the borough. Councillor C. H. Winny was elected De-puty-Mayor for the balance of the life of the council.
