SUBMARINE CAMPAIGN. CANARY ISLANDS BLOCKADED. MADRID, January 27. Reports show that German submarines are literally blockading the Canary Islands, not sparing Spanish shipsThe islanders are protesting against Germany extending the danger zone. SPANISH STEAMER BOMBED AND SUNK. (Received January 28, 8.35 p.m.) MADRID, January 27. A new Spanish steamer, the Giralda (•1200 tons), was bombed and sunk off Guardia. The attacking submarine was nameless and numberless. Newspapers indignantly protest against the German submarinings. U-BOAT SUNK. BOMBED BY DIRIGIBLE. PARIS, January 27. A French dirigible threw several bombs at a submarine. Hits were observed to unsteady her. A mino-sweeper thereupon fired, the shots apparently taking effect, as a large oil patch was observed. THE DARDANELLES. A TURKISH REPORT. A. and N.Z. Cable Association and Reuter. (Received January 20, 12.30 n.m.) LONDON, January 27. A wireless Turkish official messago says: —There was lively aerial activity in' the Dardanelles. Land fire compelled two enemy warships and minesweepers to retreat, The latter were bit three times.
